I got a new computer and downloaded FGU to it and then transferred my campaigns folder over. I thought I was done.
But when I tried to go in to work on my campaign nothing showed up. So I checked the folder and sure enough it was looking in some long winded C drive directory.
I tried to change it to the correct directory under SETTINGS and I can navigate there just fine. But the SAVE button never lights up and cannot be selected.
So at that point all I can do is select Uninstall...noooooooooo....or cancel which is almost as bad as uninsall.

How the heck to I get it to SAVE/remember the directory which is just \FGU\Campaigns?

And please please please DONT SAY "Just pray to Jesus."

Thanks for any help....I have a game TOMORROW...hopefully.

Honestly, it's just easier to copy your campaign directory from your old computer to the default location in your new computer. But, since you are past that...

Be aware, you have to change your entire FG Data directory, not just your campaign directory.

Did you change the FG Data Directory in Settings to point to your new path? (Settings > Advanced > Data Directory)
Do you have write access to that new location? i.e. do you have full permissions to \FGU\Campaigns?

The campaigns folder might be case sensitive, it should be "campaigns".

When you launch FG, click on the folder icon in the top left. Does it take you to where you think your FG data directory is?

Your data directory contains a lot more than just campaigns - it contains all of your data that isn't the installation location. I assume that you are not trying to install the data in the same place that you have installed FGU. Don't do that even if the program might allow you to do so (I don't think it does).

Unless you have a super good reason for not doing so it is generally better to accept the default location for your install and data folders. These have been chosen because they cause less problems.

The default location for data is %AppData%/Roaming/Smiteworks. If you don't for whatever reason want to use the default location then you will have to ensure you have full read/write permissions in the location that you have chosen. See here for details. https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/1161756673/Fix+Write+Permissions+Windows

One other consideration is your anti virus software (including Windows Defender). You may well need to create a rule that allows your ant virus to ignore activity in your chosen locations. Just in case you are upgrading from FG Classic to FG Unity also - the default data locations are different for the two programs as well.

Sometimes when data is copied from another computer (depending on the method) windows has a security option that can partially blocks files.

Right-click the folder, and select Properties from the menu. On the General tab of the file properties dialog, check the Unblock option if it is present.

Also while there make sure that your user has Full Permissions on the folder.

Thanks to everyone who responded. You helped me resolve this issue. However it was a flashback to the old days of FG classic and in a bad way.

Because I like to keep my games and my work separate I put FGU in its own folder on a non-C game drive. I kept getting the message that I could not have FG application in the same folder as my data folder. OK. So I made FGUData and put my data folder there. I even tried moving my campaign there when that didn’t work.
Ultimately the only way I got it to work was to move my campaign to my C drive on that

C:\thisisthesuperlongdirectorythatnoonebutsmitewor kseverremembers\data

Which of course means I can never find it without either opening FGU and clicking on the find folder button or making a shortcut and putting it on my desktop. I chose the latter but I thought way back in the days of FGC enough people had complained and my old FGC was all in one custom folder once Smite addressed that issue.
So now for my backups I have to backup my FGU folder and my c:\toolongtoremember folder.

As was the case when FGC originally came out, users should be able to install FGU to any drive or folder they desire and put their campaigns and such where they want as well.
K. Enough complaining. Again, if it wasn’t for the great community and responses here I would still be fighting with this. Although I don’t have an ideal solution it does work and lets me play tonight, so thank you again!

If you want a quick way to get to this folder without opening FGU, do this:

Click Start
Type %userprofile%, then press enter, it should open Windows Explorer to the your user profile location
The %userprofile% variable is something Microsoft provides to App developers to make it easy to store user data for applications (almost every modern app uses this location)
Go go AppData (note: not Application Data), then Roaming, then Smiteworks, you will see all of your data there

Bonus: if you want, you could right-click on the SmiteWorks folder, and choose Send to > Desktop (create shortcut) to have a shortcut on your desktop, you would only have to go through the process the first time, after that you'd always have a shortcut on your desktop. The shortcut would behave as any other Windows shortcut, you can move it elsewhere if you want with no side effects.

You can change the install and data folder locations to where ever you want with the caveat that you may have permissions issues on those other folders that you will need to resolve.

I did this with both Classic and Unity.

The easiest way to acces your data folder is to click the folder icon on the top right of the FGU start screen. It will take you right there.

I have mine on the quick access bar in Windows so that I can get to it quickly if needed.

As Sulimo says you can put the install and data directories anywhere you want; but you will have to sort read/write permissions if needed. The installation and data folders have always been different even in Classic. However Classic allowed you to install both to the same folder whereas I don't think Unity does. At any rate it's a very bad idea to have your install and data in the same folder.

But yeah, the earlier suggested thing about making shortcuts on desktop or in your documents odor or anywhere it makes sense lets you find the directory quicker.

Another option can be to “favorite” or “quick link” it in file explorer. I am not on my PC now but I recall I “pinned” some common directories including my FG dev directory to Explorer.

Yeah, I pinned my FG Data folder in File Explorer so I don't have to start FGU when I just want to mod XML files or update custom modules.
