View Full Version : Reinstalling FG (re-OSed pc) - Windows layout recommendation

I replaced my old 480SSD which is still fine (damn it's from 2014, SanDisk Extreme III, like 92% health!! more than my much newer Samsung 1TB in same system) with a new Samsung 2TB (sata which hurts cos 980 m2 was same price... but until I upgrade mb/chp etc next holidays...) and the failing WDBlack4TB with a new WDBlack10TB (copied all my useful data to my 6TB WDBlack and 1TB SSD until finish reos)

So, I am wondering is it even worth installing program files portion to SSD or, as I think, leave it in D (non-SSD) since it is only for app startup I think.
The data, I might like on SSD but thinking to try to keep it slim and for my most disk intensive games plus all the crap Windows uses/wastes on it that I found when I had so little on the 480gb and yet was constantly pushing space edge.

Regardless where I install the AppData/Fantasy Grounds portion - do I have to use the path they list? I was preferring to install it like under D:\Games\Smite Works\Fantasy Grounds etc thing. So it is less "deep" and obscure.

That said, maybe it's in this whole appdata and roaming path thing for a reason? I meant I get if it's the MS recommended thing and devs will code it for that - that's the right thing to do - but if there is no practical reason other than conformity to make things easier - then I'd rather go more top-level and put FG in same path with my other games. Easier to remember and review.

Thanks all!

[EDIT] PS - now that I looked int he backup dir of "f:\drive_d" I see I originally last time anyhow, put the appdata in a custom spot too - "DRIVE:\Users\Dan\AppData\SmiteWorks\Fantasy Grounds" so I guess I could put it in \Games\... as well.. I cannot imagine multiple people ever running on my PC so the advantage of user/appdata dir doesnt do anything for me.

That said, if I want to test my DM modules, what's the best way to run another instance? This might well decide it and show me why/where to put it?

I have the Ultimate License and can run demo one (or full if same hose, I think allowed?) but do I install it again in a diff directory or run with diff appdata (doubt that's an option)

Sorry... this is really at least 2 questiosn in one post... they ARE related though :)

I would personally leave all the applications on the main disk, and just put the data folders on the second disk. At least, that's what I used to do when I was running a two disk setup. For now, I just run a 2TB setup, and it's plenty for all my files (soon to up to 4TB though).

One thing to consider when placing any files (program or data) in custom locations is that you may end up with permissioning issues that you'll have to manage. If you're comfortable with managing/ensuring permissions, you can stick either folder anywhere. (Just make sure that shortcut matches final application install location though.)

Thank you Moon Wizard. I did C: for the program and D:\Games\SmiteWorks\Fantasy Grounds\ for the app data.
If there was any reason that I should use the whole arcane default very nester user/appdata etc path - holler. Willing to redo if there is any half-decent reason.
