View Full Version : Find monster in combat tracker from map

I have a campaign I'm running which is in-person, but I use Fantasy Grounds Unity to run the map and track monsters on a horizontally placed TV screen (I call it my DndTv). I run two copies of FG, one for my view as the DM on the laptop and one for the TV which is basically the players view. Since FG already has all of the maps and monsters loaded, I use those for rolling anything for NPC's and the players roll physical dice and I apply the effects, damage, etc manually into FG to track it. I have placeholders in FG for the characters, but it's mostly for moving tokens around. The players track their characters outside of FG using paper.

The other day, I was running through an encounter and there were 48 terracotta warriors in a single encounter. Obviously, that's a job for AOE spells, so the players started using them. I would draw out where the AOE spell was supposed to be and after the players confirmed it, they would roll damage, I would roll for saving throws and apply the damage. However, with that many creatures who were all almost identical, it was very difficult to track them down in the combat tracker.

If everyone were using FG at the table, I would have them make their rolls in FG and then drag/drop or target multiple creatures and let FG do its thing. But since about half of it is being handled manually, that wasn't really an option.

1) Is there a way to simply select a bunch of creatures and force them to roll saving throws, somehow specify an amount of damage, the type of damage and then apply it to those creatures that rolled saves? My guess is no, but maybe I'm missing something.
2) Is there a way to quickly find a creature in the combat tracker from its token on the map without manually looking through all of the token names?
3) Is there an easier way to do this?

Any ideas or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hold CTRL and click on each target then roll the save from the PC sheet and then roll the damage from the PC sheet.

Any creatures that die should then have a red delete button on the right hand side.

If you are doing this in person then use the manual dice roller (I assume you are already doing this).

There's no easy way to find a creature on the CT from the map (other than numbering - which I assume you also have switched on). You can switch a creatures visibility on the CT to 'blink' it on the map to find the token easier.

Generally you don't really need to find the creature on the CT until they die and then it's reasonably obvious which ones you need to delete from the CT.

That won't work because the players are rolling physical dice, not virtual ones inside of FG. Their spells and abilities aren't even in FG.

Again, they're using physical dice. If I could do this somehow and force the roll to be a specific number, it would probably work. I know there's a DM option for effectively overriding this kind of thing, so it would sort of work.

Unfortunately, that's really what I need to be able to do. Ugh.

As I said use the manual dice roller; it's there for face to face games where you are using FGU's automation.

So you would need to have the players characters on the Combat Tracker ( which means you'd need to create characters if you haven't already done that) as well as the NPC's. Switch on Manual dice entry. You would then select the PC whose turn it is and do any targeting. You would then roll the saving throw from the spell on the PCs action tab. The manual dice roller will then pop up. The player rolls their physical dice and you enter the number into the dice roller and click on roll. FGU then rolls against all of the targets and posts the results in chat. You then roll damage. Once again the manual dice box pops up and you get the player to roll their dice. You enter the result into the manual dice roller and click ok. The damage is applied correctly with half damage if appropriate on a successful save. You then delete any NPCs that have died and click on the next actor button to move to the next actor on the CT.

If, of course, you do not want to use FGU's automation then you will have to do it all manually I'm afraid.

Check out the Combat Highlighter extension on the Forge here: https://forge.fantasygrounds.com/shop/items/289/view

It has a lot of functionality it can add. In particular, it adds the ability for the CT to focus/highlight the NPC when you hover over the map token and vice versa. I haven't tested/used this extension in a while, so I can't say for certain whether it still works or not.

Got it. Thanks for your help.

I was aware I could do that. I was just hoping there was a much easier way of doing this, since I only have placeholders for their characters in FG. I guess I'll have to add them into FG and track their spells, abilities, attacks and everything else there so I have all the modifiers and such in place correctly.

Thanks Dudin!!! Mostly, I just needed to be able to easily find the creatures in the combat tracker and that extension is EXTREMELY helpful. The various options are pretty nice too.

Again, than you so much. I think I have what I need now.
