View Full Version : Combat Tracker initiative rolls not showing up in chat

When rolling initiative from the Combat Tracker menu, how do I get the rolls to show up in the chat window? Currently, if I roll initiative from a character (or NPC) sheet, the initiative roll shows up in the chat. But, when I roll initiative from the CT menu, it doesn't. Is there a setting somewhere?
Thanks.

When posting a question like this in a generic sub-forum, please mention the ruleset you're using as many rulesets will do things differently.
Some rulesets don't roll dice for combat tracker initiated initiative, they just generate a random number that isn't shown in the chat.

I know D&D 5E doesn't have a way to show die rolls in chat. It just determines all of them and updates the CT.

So, I'm using the Classics DND2e ruleset. Initiative Rolls are not showing up in Chat. So, my question then is, how do I verify that if I create an Effect or Modifier to Initiative that it's actually being applied?
When I use or create an effect that is for Attack Rolls, I can easily verify whether or not I'm using it or created it correctly.

Whilst the dice rolls aren't shown in 5e it does show the result of the roll and any modifiers that were applied in chat.

I don't know the 2e ruleset but you should be able to test whether the correct rolls are being made or not by looking at the numbers rolled. For example I added a +5 modifier and then rolled the NPC initiative and the result was greater than 10 which would normally be the highest number they could roll.

So, we had similar thoughts. I just did a Test where I applied -9 to Initiative to a Bugbear. The result was 7, so either I've built the command incorrectly or something else is going on. In the Chat I see it did display INIT -9.
I've included 2 screenshots.

Rolling initiatives from the CT doesn't use the modifier box. I don't know whether that's by design or an omission.
Using an effect works - I applied INIT: -9 to an NPC and then rolled the NPC initiatives from the CT menu. I ended up with a -2 initiative.

Hmmm...not sure where to go from here. I verified what you said. When I roll an individual Initiative from the Combat Tracker the Effect is applied. Unfortunately, I'm using auto-rolling of Initiative. I would really hate to manually roll initiative instead. I have some pretty in-depth Custom Crit/Fumble tables and many of the results modify Initiative for the next rnd or next # of rounds either of an individual PC or NPC or of an entire Faction.
On a related question, Do you know if an Effect can be applied to an entire faction instead of 1 combatant at a time?
I appreciate your help. I'm still very much learning the Fantasy Grounds system.

It would seem that applying an effect as in Trenloe's example to one NPC will apply that effect to the whole group.

This is probably gonna seem like an exceptionally stupid question, but I'm gonna say that despite being a relatively intelligent person I avoid "forums" like the plague, because something about them just doesn't work well with the way my brain works...In fact, I don't think I've ever posted to a forum until I started using FG.
Can I move this thread to that 2e Ruleset somehow or do I need to start a fresh post?

No, you have to have permissions. But I've moved it for you.

NPC initiative rolls do not show unless you manually roll for them because most of the time there are a large number of npcs and will flood the chat window. INIT effects are applied whether you roll the initiative manually or if the initiative is auto triggered by new round.

So if I write a custom Effect and test it on an individual PC or NPC, then it should work for the group Initiative as well. That helps!
Is there a way to apply any Effect to an entire Faction without needing to click on each individual combatant?
I so appreciate all the help everyone's providing. I do attempt to search extensively most of the time before using forums to ask questions.

If you target all of the tokens on the MAP and then apply an effect to the group, it will apply to all of them. That's the only thing that comes to mind based on what you are describing.
