View Full Version : Modified Images not loading after Module Update

Hey all,

I am having an issue that I did find two other related threads on, but there was either no resolution, or it was a resolution it seemed for a custom module and not an official one. I am including the links to both of those for reference at the bottom of this.

I am using FGU, and I have purchased the official Rise of the Drow adventure module for it. From that I have created a new campaign (a number of months ago now) and loaded that module for our use. When I am running my campaign that has the module loaded into it and load up one of the Player Map Image Files when we are playing, and I make adjustments to it (maybe add drawing layer to mark / highlight things during our session). Then we save and end our gaming session for that night.

We meet again for our next session (usually a couple weeks later) and the first thing I do is run the FGU Update to make sure everything is up to date. Sometimes I do see that it downloads a new version of the official RotD adventure module as well. I then load our campaign and any of the images that I had shared with the players and made customizations to are unable to load properly. It loads the window and where it has the pins / markup layers, but the underlying image is giving an error about not being able to load the file and shows the red ?. The only thing I have been able to do so far to fix this is revert the image to the official module version again (which loses our customizations and not really what I want to do), but that does restore the ability to see the underlying image.

53612 This is the image showing the error.

53613 This is the image list showing it shared or edited.

53618 This is the error in the log file.

After that I did a revert to the original on the edited image.

53619 Image list post revert showing its back to the module version.

53621 The loaded window with the map image now works properly, but now I have lost all of my additional markup layers.

Is there some other way to fix this when an official module is updated without actually losing the customizations we made during our sessions?

Related issue that I found, that didn't seem to have a resolution for the other user. https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?69227-FGU-dosen-t-load-some-image-after-last-update
Related issue that I found, but this is for a custom module the user created and seemed to have a resolution by modifying the contents of the zip file. https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?67904-Help-needed-fixing-broken-campaign-using-custom-module

Thank you,
Maxtor

So after an Update, but before you Revert, you are seeing the blank image? And you are only modifying the image using the tools built into FG?
Does the error occur only when the official module is updated, or even just after exiting and restarting the campaign?

It depends on the update and what you've customized in the module, and whether you're comfortable making XML edits...

When you make any changes to a module, the changes (and data related to the change) is stored in the campaign moduledb directory - in an XML file named the same as the module. When the whole module changes are reverted, the whole of this XML file is deleted - removing all of your changes. You can revert changes on just individual records - modified records have a quill and book icon, instead of just the module book icon - right-click -> Revert to just revert the change for that record.

But, if the issue is related to a misnamed map image link, then the only way to "fix" this without reverting to changes is to manually edit the moduledb XML file (when FG isn't running) - but you might be guessing what the image should actually be called. Unfortunately, your issue is probably the result of a mismatch in image paths/names, which was fixed in April - https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?73451-Release-Updates-for-April-19th-2022 But, this "fix" messed up the changes you made when the image path/name was different.

1. So after an Update, but before you Revert, you are seeing the blank image? Yes
2. And you are only modifying the image using the tools built into FG? Yes, and they are very minor in most cases, additional pins, maybe additional light sources/layers with some other items like furniture, or drawing layers.
3. Only occurs after the official module was updated. Otherwise it works fine between sessions.

As for the updates, I mentioned this in my other reply as well, but its additional pins, maybe additional light sources/layers with some other items like furniture, or drawing layers.

The revert of the individual item as you mentioned is exactly what I am doing to get the image to reappear, but then as you said I lose any of my customizations for that and that is what I am trying to retain in some fashion.

I don't know if its a misnamed map link in the module as it was working prior to update, but then broke post update. And this is the third time in the last 6 months or so that this has happened in this module alone. Unless the images are constantly being moved in this module for some reason? The last update I did was a few days ago, and the image I had made changes to last was just a few weeks prior to that. So both of those were after the April fix, so I am not certain if that would be related. :(

Do you have a backup of your campaign directory before you reverted changes?

I do not for the example that I used, but I do still have at least one that is broken that I have not revert.

Please ZIP up the campaign directory for the campaign with the issue, found at <FG app data>\campaigns\<your campaign name> - get to <FG app data> by clicking the folder icon in the top left of the main FGU launch screen.

Then post the ZIP file here - if it's too large, please put it on a cloud storage solution and provide a link so we can download the file.

And please let us know which image still has the issue.

I have uploaded the zip file to a google drive. [Removed URL, if needed again, please ask.]

The image after loading the campaign that is still having the same issue is: Rybalka Cathedral Player (Copy)

Preview of the image display:

I found 3 others that are broken as well:

TaleofTwoPaths Player
Morlock_Mounds Player
Tomb Player

Thank you for the help!

Yeah, there still appears to be issues with the following images:

As a workaround: to get the maps to be close to what they should be, open the image from the campaign Images window and enter edit mode (unlock) and then find the image in Assets -> Images. Drag the image thumbnail from assets to the open image record, resize and move as needed so that the newly dragged image matches the size and position of the old one - looking at LoS and lighting can help with this.

Thank you! While not ideal or the easiest thing to do with trying to line it up again, that at least helps me to keep my edits without losing those. I wish I could figure out the underlying cause if it was something I was doing or if its just the way the updates for that module are being done... I do appreciate the help everyone provided to dig into this.

It's caused by the invalid image links.

Could you log this as a technical support ticket from this link please: https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/servicedesk/customer/portals

I want to make sure support are fully aware of this and that they work with you to make sure it's working correctly. Reference this thread and post#10 I made above listing the images with issues.

Here's an updated version of the campaign that appears to have the links fixed, if you want to download and double-check.
[Link Removed]

Let me know once you've downloaded, and I can remove the link.
