View Full Version : Recovering Cache Data

Perhaps I'm just not seeing it, so if it's already been answered, point me in the right direction.
Problem: GM had a massive computer blow-out, had to reformat his hard drive. I'm a player. There are two "modules" he had us load that included his (home brew) campaign story data and some specific (plot-critical) items. I have those two as .dat files in the cache for the campaign. How do I (or how does he, if I send him the files) actually access the information in those files in order to help rebuild the campaign?

To my understanding there is no way to do this. Smiteworks may decide to help but I think their official stance is they are unable to.

Please send a note to support with the contents of the cache folder zipped up. There's no guarantee what information is included in the cache file; because it depends on what was shared with that player as well as what is in the cache file at that point in time. (i.e. players only have data for what has been shared with them.) We'll also need the log files for the user that sends in the cache folder (press console button in upper left of launcher, and select Compile Logs.) There is no guarantee that we will be able to retrieve anything, or any particular piece of data; but we'll see what we can do.

Thanks, JPG.
Do you need everything in the cache, or just the two files that have his homebrew data? A lot of it is stuff from various publishers - 5e automatic effects, DD Waterdeep, etc. But there are two .dat files that had stuff from the campaign the GM created. At least, I'm pretty sure it's just those two since everything else is a known, published module title.
Sent it in to customer support. If need anything else, my email is of course included in the customer support note.

You should send in the entire cache folder; because I'm assuming that you might want to recover other data as well (shared stories/notes not from modules, player characters, etc.) Though PCs should be able to be imported by each player into a local campaign, and then exported to XML for later import.
