You know how customers are never satisfied? You give them a great feature, and all they do is go "More more more"? Well... this is kind of like that.
I am loving the lighting, the line of sight, etc. Really makes it fun for my players to truly explore. However.... <grins>, I have been using Dungeon Alchemist for producing my maps recently (very nice tool, even if it does not do round walls, caves or rooms) and (obviously) it works in 3-D; you can rotate, alter the angle, zoom in, up/down etc. When you export it for FGU, it translate into a purely overhead view - good by itself, but if FGU could handle 3-D rendering... Well.. as I said - never satisfied :-)
Is there any plan at some point in the future (a year or two?) down the line where this might become possible? Where the battle maps used in FGU could be 3-D constructions that you could rotate, alter the angle on etc.?
Cheers!

Nothing is impossible but 3d mapping is a whole different ballgame. And personally I'm not sure that it's needed or that it would add anything to the way non CRPGs are played.

One of FGs developers was the one who created Table Top Connect some time ago, which was a 3D engine. So the skillset and knowledge is in house. That being said, I suspect SmiteWorks has a lot of things on the plate (many years worth) for FG before they look at 3D rendering. But it's technically possible, but it just might not be practical or a good business decision yet.

One of the biggest challenges is that 99%+ of TTRPG content does not come with 3D assets; so in addition to feasibility, there is also the consideration of sourcing, approval, cost, etc. of 3D assets.

I am enjoying dungeon alchemist a lot but even if 3d worked in fgu I wouldn’t use it. I like the 3d mode for design though. Makes it more efficient to view from all angles when adding the little details .

I have played around with Dungeon Alchemist. So far in game I use the 2D for tactical combat, and an isometric Snip from DA (since it does not export in iso so far) as a visual/exploration (a nice Baldurs Gate feel). I have played around with Table Top Simulator (a 3D environment) and so far I am "not ready for it". But if DA exports to a 3D render, then maybe...maybe. I have no idea how hard it is to make/acquire at a reasonable price 3D assets. Until its more ubiquitous, its going to be like real table top - a mishmash of representative terrain, 2D assets to fill in, and ye old "the bottlecap represents x".
Then it will all move to Meta anyway :)

It's very easy to do caves and even round rooms in DA. Raise the terrain then carve out a tunnel, change the texture to rock and there you go instant cave. You can do large round caverns, water filled swamps. With a bit of tinkering, you can get some really decent maps.

Hi there - Hmmm - no dea on how to do that! Sounds cool - I will need to play a bit more with DA, obviously. I do not see how DA could do round/curved locations! Cool if it can!
