View Full Version : Creating maps for Call of Cthulhu

With the release of the new version of Masks of Nyarlathotep for Fantasy Grounds, I'm looking to up my game in terms of creating an immersive experience for my players.

While I know that CoC is largely a "theater of the mind" game, I like the idea of using maps where appropriate to add a visual element and also allow for combat positioning.

In the past, I've created maps using DungeonDraft and imported them into FGU. However, this was a bit tedious and the maps didn't have line of sight or proper lighting or anything else (admittedly, this may be largely due to my lack of knowledge of the FGU interface).

I recently watched a YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnDmFEE9gMM) from GenCon 2021 on map creation in FGU and was amazed at the capabilities built into the FGU interface (yeah, yeah, I know; I'm behind the times).

So, has anyone created maps for CoC using FGU? If so, what map packs did you find useful?

I'm considering purchasing the following map assets, but am trying to get the most "bang for my buck" while keeping my cost low:

FG Victorian Map Pack 1 (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/store/product.php?id=SWKARTPACKVIC1)
FG Victorian Map Pack 2 (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/store/product.php?id=SWKARTPACKVIC1)
FG Modern House Map Pack (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/store/product.php?id=SWKARTPACKMDRNHOUSE1)
FG Modern House 2 Map Pack (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/store/product.php?id=SWKARTPACKMDRNHOUSE2)
Fantasy Grounds Art Pack 2019 (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/store/product.php?id=SWKArtPack2019) (Has this been updated or superseded by something else?)

I would consider an art pack subscription, but all of your work and assets disappear if you cancel the subscription. So, I'd prefer to just by the map packs outright.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

In darkest thoughts,

The packs you have listed are what I’ve been using on and off for 1920s CoC. I honestly get a bit bored putting them together and wherever possible stick to theatre of the mind, or find photos of locations. Remember you can use the tools in FGU to light and otherwise manipulate images too.
