View Full Version : Will FG ever stop blowing my fan up?

Hey everyone, my fan constantly runs when I play and I just wanted to see if anyone knew what's going on here.

To be fair, it's an older Mac, but it's a 2.7 GHz Quad Core i7, 16GB RAM. That said, I can run Adobe Photoshop AND Adobe Premier at the same time (very intense programs), and still that wouldn't set off my fan as much as FG does. My key's get so hot they can burn my fingers.

It happens most when there's maps open, but it seems kind of ridiculous that this happens. I've been using FG for 2 years now, I love the program, but this one thing I thought would eventually get worked out. It used to run even when maps weren't open, so at least there's progress, but I was just wondering why it's so taxing when I have 4 cores running and 16 gigs of RAM available. Even really super-low-res maps do this. What am I missing? Thanks for any info!

This is usually caused by the graphic card overrides the graphics refresh rate and maximizing the refresh rate. See this article; https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/1638006786/Reducing+GPU+Usage

Thanks, so if I'm reading this correctly, part of the issue is because I have a retina screen? so the frame rate might be much higher than it needs to be?

I don't see any instructions for Mac's and I don't have any kind of individual Nvida card or IntelHD graphics card (it has dual graphics cards) settings for the individual manufacturers like the page shows. I can do the vsync, but I don't see the setting to reset it back to default (like after the game is over I would want to set the computer back to normal so it didn't affect any other systems I'm using).

Do you know if there's a command for that? Thanks for your help!

Try the /vsync command. /vsync 2 or 3 should help. FGU is behaving like a 3D game that is constantly outputting images at 60 Hz on your high resolution screen. Vsync will tell it to lower the refresh rate, which makes it choppier but less demanding on the GPU. Report back if that makes any difference.

I am a long time FG Mac user and I solved the problem by purchasing new Macs with an M1 processor. I have the Mac mini M1 and and a 13" Macbook Pro M1 and the performance with FG is amazing compared to my Intel Macs! The little 13" with 8GB of ram runs circles around my 15" 2015 Macbook Pro with 16 GB ram.

I also solved the problem by buying a Nvidia RTX 3090 for 2100 EUR. It runs circles around the 15" 2018 Macbook Pro with integrated Intel graphics that cost less for the whole computer. /irony off :P

'/vsync 0' set FGU back to default. But if it works, you don't need to because it only affects what is going on in FGU. You can check your video/graphics drivers/settings to see if you can set application specific refresh rates. I don't use Macs so not sure what that might look like. And Retina is part of the issue, because in effect they are extremely high resolution displays so your computer has to calculate more pixels.

This is why I don't use high resolution displays. I'm over 50 and can't see beyond 1080p anymore anyway!
