Just wondering if this is possible or do you have to reroll if you forget to target?

Any particular ruleset? Rulesets can do things differently, so if posting in a generic forum it’s best to indicate any rulesets you’re interested in.
Some (most?) rulesets allow drag/drop of the result from the chat window onto the CT or a CT linked token on the map. If you mention what ruleset/s you’re interest3d in we can provide more information.

Trenloe, I have a similar question but different. :)
Playing 5e, and wondering if it's possible to create a damage roll in the chat window that I can then apply to the characters. Something like falling damage, or a trap/spell effect. I know I can create an NPC with the save and damage, etc. But wondering if there is a way to roll a d6 on the fly in the chat window and then drag it as damage to a character or characters.

Sort of. You can drag any die result from Chat directly to the wounds field of the character in the CT and it will apply it as untyped damage.
You might be able to do something like '/die 1d6 fire' to make the result typed, but I don't think that will work.

Thanks! I had tried dragging it to the player in the CT but that didn't work. Never considered dragging it straight to the wound field. If I absolutely need to have a damage type I can create an NPC with the attack/effect and do it that way, but this is perfect for a quick spur of the moment fall or pit or whatever.
Thanks again!

In some cases, you can create generic NPCs to make wounds or damage rolls easier. These would be sort of like traps or hazards. They do not have to be loaded onto or into the combat tracker and can be pinned directly to a map or story entry. If everyone is going to receive the SAME damage, you can manually add to the others caught up in the hazard or threat zone.
