View Full Version : Map pins/shortcuts connecting to storypoints/notes etc..?

Hello,

I've been searching for a way to put story/notes-pins onto my maps, but I'm coming up short.. It's been a few years since I used FG last time, but I seem to remember this being a feature in FGC; where you could add a pin to the map and then link it to a place/entry in your story? This would be super helpful when you need to pull up a certain description of an area, a certain location-specific check, trap or just a note for yourself as a GM. Am I just horribly bad at finding stuff out or is this actually not a thing in FGU? Or is there a way to do this?

Edit: I am aware that you can put encounters, images, parcels and whatnot on the map as pins, but as far as I found you can't have story links/notes? I found you could put pins from the "notes" section so I guess a work around would be to create a description in the story, make a note containing said description and then link those together and then put the note link onto the map as a pin, but that seems very counter-intuitive and a lot of work. If chatframes, or a similar feature (description frames) could be linked to the map as pins that would work lovely.

Dragging the link of the story entry to the map would create a link.

Ok. I must be using the "Story" portion of FG wrong then.

I have my story section organized by the "Group" being the overarching campaign/story - let's call it "Adventure time", and then I have the story-items listed beneath that as the individual portions of that campaign/main story. Like so:

Adventure time:

The mystery of the missin ratcatcher
The howling wind of Sherkalar
Four against the Coven

Each of these stories can be linked, but there are no way that I've found to link individual sections, headlines or descriptions other than parcels, encounters etc under these stories.

Adventure time (can be linked)
Main stories:
- The mystery of the missing ratcather (can be linked)
--------- Headlines:
--------- The Town of Villingen (can't be linked)
--------------- Story paragraphs:
--------------- Description of the inn (can't be linked)
--------- The majors office (can't be linked)
--------- The sewer (can't be linked)
-----------------------Skillcheck for picking the hideout lock (can't be linked)
--------------- Another story section (can't be linked)
- The howling wind of Sherkalar (can be linked)

So, to get linkable storypoints I need to add the entire hierarchy as a flat structure under the "Main stories" heading and loose the entire structure?

I guess I'd have to do something like this in the "story" window then:

A - The mystery of the missing ratcather
A1 - The Town of Villingen
A1.1 - Description of the inn
A1.2 - The majors office
A1.3 - The sewer
A1.3.1 - the sewer hideout
A2 - Another story section (can't be linked)
B - The howling wind of Sherkalar (can be linked)

That would make every point pinnable, but I'd loose the nesting feature which I thought I was getting with FG.

If I want a marker on a map showing the location of a trap, an event or a description I'd have to use an encountermarker or somesuch?

All the adventures are broken up that way. If its for Area A its on one story. If its for Area B its on another story.

Thanks. That clears up a bit for me. I've never seen an official module in FG so I must have misunderstood how things were supposed to work.

To be honest I'd much rather have my entire story in one continuous scrollable window than several separate pop-up windows, but that's just me then I guess.

Thanks again for your answer. (PS: That first answer there made me chuckle Damned. :) )

have you seen the Author tool in action?
also from the next major update (which might be tomorrow) there is a refman builder in the Core product
this might give you both options - smaller stories for pinning to the map and a reference manual that is easier to read.

Ah, no I haven't even heard of the "author tool". I'm sort of a returning player. I used FGC in 2017 and am only now jumping back into FGC after using paper for a few years in between.
