View Full Version : Play By Post on Fantasy Grounds Unity?

My question is that: Is there any complications that could arise by leaving my Fantasy grounds open so My group and I could continue playing in between in person game, or even have a strictly play by post game on FG. Will the program disconnect if it sits unused for a period of time? If a player signs in after other posts are made in the chat bar, does it load those messages?

I just found the world of play-by-post and although it is painfully slow, I really like how much easier it is for me to roll play because I have the time to think about my reactions and describe the gestures and mannerisms of my character. Now I want to find a way to blend FG with the play by post ability to not have everyone there at the same time.

Players will only see messages that are posted to Chat while connected. The only thing that would cause FG to become disconnected is if security softwre closes the port.

Good Day DragonBetween :)
I have never played a "Play by post" game. Perhaps the players could pop in and use Notes either public or private depending on if it is for everyone or just the GM. :)

FG will run ok 24/7 but the players wont see all that has gone on before the as LordEntrails suggests.
I have played in PbP game using FG but the GM was using FG for combat resolution and character management etc but we did all the roleplay in a google doc.
That also allows you to go back and insert play/action before other things which will happen a lot with PbP.

Damned comments made me remember when I did PbP decades ago we used a site called Rondak's Portal. I believe it is still around. You may want to use that for chat and image sharing and FG for combat to follow along damned suggestion.

Ya I was thinking of doing a hybrid. To do play by post in between gaming seasons on FG.

You could just setup a Discord Server too. That way you could use it for in game voice. Then setup some channels, one for OOC, one for IC, one for DM shared references (maps, handouts, etc), then throw in a chat or questions channel as well.

I've wondered for a long while as well - is some sort of persistence possible with FGU? Something like reposting some selection of the chatlog when a user logs in.

Edit: Not possible now, of course, but is it achievable at any point given the program and how it runs

The chatlog is stored in the campaign directory, chatlog.html. It can get pretty long, but providing a means of accessing it from inside FG is a possibility that could be used for this purpose.

This is one of the positives of Roll 20 - its "always on". Although I am all in on FGU, I would run such a game on Roll20 or some other similar platform.

I think this “always on” will come FG. None of the other VTT has FG has in that FG is being constantly developed and worked on. I remember the beta version of FGU and it has come so far.

I would pay a subscription fee to have my game on a server so it could be played like a play-by-post game in between sessions. I have also expanded my discord site for right now and I am conversion my players characters to DnD Beyond and keeping them in sync. So we can do things like downtime on play-by-post and keep the the main game session to running the adventure. Doing the down time role playing on discord text in between game sessions is working out nice so far. Especially since I can do it this way on my phone and address everything on discord when ever I have time to kill anywhere.

The only time I remember a pbp game was around 1989 or 1990 on a bbs my friend ran. It was fun for a short while but I don’t believe it lasted an entire summer. Ultimately I don’t think pbp is for me but I know it has a passionate niche that enjoys it greatly.
