View Full Version : No program updates after Windows System Restore

When Windows System Restore is used to get back to a former "restore point" that includes an older version of FGU then the updater does not update to new versions anymore (claiming to be up to date).

In the past I could solve this by changing the branch back and forth to Test and Live, but this time I am stuck at 4.1.7. Installing over the old installation did not help, so I will try to uninstall/reinstall instead.

Uninstall + reinstall worked, but SW might want to look into a more robust update process that better identifies the currently installed version.

Does someone know which file I do have to edit/delete to make FGU update again without having to uninstall/reinstall? Thanks in advance.

There is no file that precludes updating; so I'm not sure what is blocking your scenario. I would recommend a re-install.

Problem is that FGU Updater claims that I need no update, despite the installed version being outdated.
Checking package version.
Validating file integrity.
File integrity verified.

I currently use Windows Restore quite regularly, and every time I have to uninstalled FGU afterwards to make it properly update again. So there has to be some configuration file or registry entry that makes FGU think that it is still up-to-date when it is not (but was before the System Restore).

It uses the vault .dat files to determine whether to download. You could try deleting the ones for FantasyGroundsUpdater/FantasyGrounds in the vault folder, and see if that works.
It's not really a use case that most users follow and not something I want to be doing on my development system; so re-install may be your only option if you want to continue to system restores like that.

Thanks, I will try to delete the file, else I can restore it from backup. Should take less time than uninstalling.

Does the force update in the advanced options also not work?

Is the "FantasyGrounds.dat" file responsible for the main application's updates?
Edit: Yes, seems like it. I just deleted this file and the FGU updater downloaded the main FGU application. I will give it a try after a system restore once a new version is out. Only just upgraded to Windows 11, so everything is still in flux here.

Which "force update" do you mean, I see nothing there other than changing builds?! Deleting the vault files causes them to be reloaded, so this is a solution that works. :)
Having a "Force Update" button would be useful, though.

In the settings, under "troubleshoot", should be a button "force app update" or something like this :)

Ah, yes, under Troubleshooting. And it even does exactly what it claims to do: forces updates on FGU Updater and FGU main app. That should do the trick better than having to manually delete the files. Thanks for the hint!
