View Full Version : Monsters without tokens ?

Why dont the default monsters in fantasy grounds come with tokens attached?

Its just that im thinking that I would like to keep all the tokens handy. This would mean that I would have to keep token bags for goodness knows how many creatures which sounds difficult as the tokens in those bags dont seem to include the token names, even when you hover over them! so lots of tokens with no names would be confusing to say the least.

Is there some solution?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give to me

I have a fair amount of tokens, but I don't always bother to actually use a different token for each type of monster. I would suggest you make or get a few "generic" tokens you can use for any monster and only worry about specific tokens for important monsters.

There are alot of monster pictures up on the internet you can use to make tokens. TokenTool in particualar is easy to use and they have a large picture libarary on the site in the gallery. https://rptools.net/doku.php?id=home

WotC has a ton of pictures also.

The problem is paying for art. Artists are not cheap, and legally you cannot just grab someone's art and use it in a distributed copy of FG.

FYI, Digital Adventures has nearly 3,000 tokens for sale, converted from Fiery Dragon's Counter Collection, all properly scaled to one another. A complete list of the tokens can be found here:

https://www.digitaladventures.net/token_list.txt

Otherwise, the mentioned Token Tool is a very nice alternative.

Yes artists will cost money so will programmers and secretaries but we are talking about a company here not an individual lol :)

There is no shortage of budding artists who are making tokens for free im sure some of them could be enlisted at a reasonable price :)

Thanks for the digital adventures tip :)

The reason that incorporated tokens would be good is because Fantasy Realms have an very very small tokens area when you consider lets say alll the tokens needed for monster manual 1 and 2.

Another way round it is to make it possible for people to permenantly attach tokens of their choosing to specific monsters. these tokens would not show up in the tokens tray. somthing ackin to a monster portrait because in truth I suspect that it's monster portraits we are talking of here.

The other issue is that some people like the round tokens and some like the top down tokens.

If you make it, they will come - field of dreams :)

They look nice

That first one with the bow though, IMO the bowstring is on the wrong side of his arm, should be on the inside of his forearm otherwise you end up hitting your arm with the string before the string has travelled its full range and skew your shot (even for a horizontal shot).

As for tokens I have found that using tokentool the WotC mini piccies are ideal.

You mean pictures of the minis? It would be ideal except they're terrible.

Meh nice and easy to get and I find they are a good enough representation of the creatures and you get various weapon set ups on the minis of humanoids.

Personally I am very fond of Wyldfur's tokens made in Poser.

(( Even if they tend to make the girlfriend joke that : "All fantasy art is softcore porn... pretty weird porn at that" ))

When I make a new adventure module I fire up my browser with my "Token Tabs" fired up. I'll have TokenTool running and browser tabs pulled up for WotC D&D pages, Deviant Art, D&D Minis Warband Generator, as well as the monster index on the D&D site. (Oh, and all 8 of the sample monster token pages that were in Dragon Magazine. :P)

I have just as much fun making tokens as I do DMing the game.

And the D&D minis are hit and miss. The kobold sorcerer looks good, the orc cleric of gruumsh is a little rough. The dire weasel looks pretty good if you run 128 pixel tokens like I do (so they are really crisp when zoomed in) but the kobold zombie is just a crappy photo--it's out of focus.

I'm still trying to find a good water mephit; the one in the MMv3.5 is right next to a fire mephit so I don't use it. I try to follow the traditional D&D token style, showing the waist up. I've considered trying some "top-down" miniatures, but so far it's just seemed like a lot of work. I mean, out of 23 years of D&D, I started using tokens with VTTs. Before then we either used mage-knight minis, or coins. ("The two 50 cent pieces are a juvenile black dragon, everyone.")

Heh. Good times.

FYI, races of the dragon has a SWEET kobold mounted on a dire weasel.

And where would I track those down?

Arion Games will soon be branching out into Top Down Tokens, some examples can be seen here (https://www.fouruglymonsters.com/community/showthread.php?t=1410)
