Is it possible to house rule 5E, such as incorporating proficiency dice ( from DMG)?

The question says it all, I saw a video on this variant rule from the DMG, and I love it. Just wondering if it's currently possible to change how proficiencies work or if that's hardcoded into the FG system. Or perhaps there's an extension the lets you use it?
