Goodday,
I am preparing for my first time dming in years in FGU. We are going to play Hoard of the dragonqueen. In there there is an encounter that is generated in npc's by the amount of pc's there are. I have 2 pc's in the combat tracker but when i press generate i get an empty encounter to import in the tracker. Can someone tell me what i am doing wrong?

The PCs need to be in the Party Sheet. See the last bullet point here: https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/996641934/5E+NPCs+and+Encounters#Creating-Random-Encounters

Is it possible to create encounters like these via importing text? I have been able to create NPCs by clicking on the blue "import text" button in the NPC window and pasting properly formatted text into the box, but I am trying to figure out how to do this for encounters. The encounters window doesn't have a blue button, but the tables window does. Since that tables window contains some encounters, I tried guessing at the proper formatting for encounter text importing, but haven't gotten one to be created yet. If it is possible to create an encounter this way, any example holding the proper formatting for "pasting" an encounter into the blue upload text area in the tables window would be much appreciated!
Not sure if this makes a difference, but I plan on creating a variety of home brew NPCs, and then including those NPCs in the encounters that I aim to build. I assume that will work provided I use the proper spellings of the names I give these NPCs?

No, encounters currently have no import capability that I'm aware of. You might be able to do somethings with rollable tables and having them generate encouonters, but not exactly what you are looking for, I think.

Basically, I am looking to paste text somewhere into FGU that might look something like this:
cave encounter
1d6 goblins
3d12 some_homebrew_NPC_monster
5 knolls
1d6 + 1 seahags
so that it creates a clickable link for me that I can click to automatically add that number of each of those monsters to the combat tracker at any point in time during any future game session.

You can't as LE says import an encounter since an encounter is basically just a list of linked NPC's.
You can create a rollable table which will generate a random encounter - or series of random encounters see here https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/996640986/Using+Tables+to+Create+Random+Results#Creating-an-Encounter-Table
You can also create the encounters or random encounters and link those to a rollable table. But you can't import any kind of wording or text that will create links in a table or that will create links in an encounter. You need to drag and drop the links into the encounter itself, or generate the encounter using a table.

Okay gotcha. Thanks Zacchaeus and LE for the clarification!
