Powers can be used to perform various actions in the 5th edition ruleset (unsure about other rulesets). You can apply an effect, heal damage, deal damage, roll an attack, or provoke a saving throw.
I think it would be useful if there was an option for an action that "consumes" a charge, either of an item in the character's inventory, or a use of another power, or a spell slot.
In this way you could have an ability to drink a potion that actually consumed a potion in your inventory when it was used; or have an ability that uses a charge of a generic resource such as ki, psionic power, superiority die, or channel divinity.

Hey, not sure I fully understand some of the use cases here. Take Ki, for example, I haven't had any problems with simple putting all Ki powers into a group and giving the group the appropriate number of uses. Though I suppose there is a slight learning curve to remember to tick the correct number of uses when a power requires more than one Ki point.
For items though, I can recommend my Kit'N'Kaboodle (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?65937-5E-Kit-N-Kaboodle) extension, which allows one to define powers and charges for items directly, which are then available to the character (including NPCs) when equipped. If used in conjunction with the Clock Adjuster (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?57561-Utility-Clock-Adjuster) extension, you can even configure items to gain charges based on the time of day.

To clarify I'm not saying there isn't a way to do this stuff or manually track ability uses; or that you couldn't automate it with extensions (I use an extension to manage consumable items for example), just that it'd be nice for there to be some way to automate this natively in FGU, i.e, when you use an ability for it to then tell your inventory to update the number of items, or to allow it to consume a usage of another separate ability.

I appreciate the help, but this doesn't address what I'm getting at. I know you can set up an ability to automate how consumables work; but setting a consumable to have a certain number of uses doesn't alter the number of items in your inventory.

In that case you should add your suggestion to the idea informer (link in my signature) it will get lost in the forums.
