View Full Version : PF2 Vision working correctly in Live?

Have just finished a session tonight with the new lighting and vision effects in a 5e campaign. All seemed to work fine.

However, In PF2, it seems that any vision has to be written as an effect in the CT, rather than it taken from the character sheet like 5e. Is this expected?

Also, tokens disappear, even if owned, and double clicking on the token icon on the character sheet, doesn't get it back. Both are currently owned by the same player.

I eventually clicked on the space where the token was and got this error on the Player side

The player can only see other tokens, including enemies if Lighting is disabled, or a torch is added to the character. Darkvision on its own, seems to be the problem?

Ha realised, Darkvision has to have a range, though in PF2, range is not specified.

@spoonhead,

Next time you get a console error, can you please hit the Compile Logs button at the top of the console and provide the file?

Thanks,

Just testing the other stuff first.

If you include "Darkvision" in the Senses field on the PC sheet, it will pick it up automatically.
Also, if you add "VISION: darkvision" to the effects in the CT, it will also pick it up.

Are you sure you don't have any unpacked versions of rulesets in your FG data folder? (CoreRPG or PFRPG2)

Definitely no unpacked versions.

With just Darkvision on the senses line, the vision remains black. In the CT the vision is there (as you can see above, but any token is invisible) Only ny adding a range, does the token appear.

I just documented the exception console message in a ticket to @cpinder.

Can you also provide me with more information (exact steps) on how to see the original reported issue in an empty PFRPG2 campaign?

Thanks,

OK Here Goes;

1. Created new campaign
2. imported character
3. Opened up map module
4. Dropped character onto CT
5. Dragged character onto map
6. Enabled Player Vision Preview

Character has only Darkvision on Senses line of character sheet.

I tried it with lower case (darkvision). No joy.

7. Created effects line on character as per format.

Voila!

8. Added enemy onto CT from Bestiary
9. Enabled show NPC
10. Dragged NPC onto map

The token remains "transparent" on the GM map, whether it is hidden or showing in CT

11. Added range into effects description

Another issue, when recreating this, is the player can not add their own effects via the CT, only the GM. They can however drag effects from their Character sheet or the effects list top right.

I was wondering as R18 is also in test, it might be working as intended there, but as we are still on release 17 in Live, that is why it's not working as expected?

That's standard across rulesets and has always been the case.

The senses link wasn't put in the release 17 code, only the release 18 code in test.

I'll work with Moon Wizard for the best way to address this.

So it is. I realised that my players first create the code as an action then drop it on their character. Silly me. :)

I need to play more and DM less.

In release 18 they'll be able to edit their character based effects directly on the PC Combat tab.

I can confirm that "Darkvision" from a character's Senses line is not picked up while using an effect in the CT works.

Senses data is not currently read in the PF2 ruleset.

As a temporary workaround, put the following effect on the relevant PCs in the combat tracker: VISION: 1000 darkvision

The distance is needed to allow characters to see other tokens correctly.

My post was more a clarification for all reading this as to what is currently available in the PF2 ruleset.

So, using something like this workaround, your post earlier (post #10) showed that it worked. Other than senses not being read, and needing a distance, what isn't working for you?

spoonhead

I think that is it. It started off just trying to see how lighting and vision worked. I assumed the senses line worked as it does in 5e, so when it didn’t I did some testing. Hence finding out about having to use distance in the effect line.

With PF2, does low-light vision need coding? I’m just trying to understand how it works. If a torch gives off 20ft bright and then 20 dim, how would a character see it all as bright light with low-light vision?

The v4.1 release caught me on the hop and the senses field sync hasn't been implemented in live. There's also the issue with requiring the distance to be worked out.

Nothing has been done for low-light vision currently.

I agree with the above, putting darkvision or darkvision XX in the senses section does nothing, I had to create an effect and place it in the CT

Thanks Trenloe. My campaign starts tomorrow, so just making sure I know what to expect. Have been adding in lights and ambient lighting to the first map ahead of the session.

I got the hang of cutting holes in the mask to mimic holes in the roof of the building, that seems to work OK.

Great! Are you running a set module or doing it yourself?

Set Module. The Abomination Vaults. As they explore the building, and the time of day changes, the colours in the rooms with holes also change.

Very cool! Hope you and your players have a great time exploring.

The requirement to enter a number to see other tokens is a bug (i.e. VISION: 1000 darkvision); and I've filed to take a look at. Might be best that PF2 vision isn't automatic right now; since it would be a bit broken anyway.

I'm also struggling to get vision effects on my tokens. Addition vision to the CT via Effects does not work. Only adding Token light via the Light menu on the map works for me.

What effects did you try?

I tried

VISION: 20 torch
VISION: 1000 darkvision
VISION: darkvision

neither worked. Adding via map to tokens works fine.

Edit: this is Age of Ashes book4. I manually added LoS since it wasn't there. This is also an ongoing campaign, so I'm not sure what do I have to reset. I tried re-adding PCs to the CT, with no effect.

Two of those three won't work.

Try:
LIGHT: 20 torch
VISION: 1000 darkvision

Both of these work for me. For VISION you need to click on the token to see the vision for that actor in the CT.

Make sure that torch, darkvision, etc. are all lower case.

Those don't work for me either. I tried a different campaign, same issue. I'm definitely missing something here.

That should work (see the screenshot below).

What LoS lines are on that map?
What extensions are you running?
What versions of CoreRPG and PF2 are reported in the chat window?

You, sir Trenloe, are a genius. It was an extension (it always is, shame on me to forget). In my particular case, it was the Height extension. I assume other extensions that messes with the Image layer might have issues too.
