View Full Version : Bug: Kicked Out Within 5 Minutes of Each Login

OS: Windows 10
Dungeons and Dragons (5E) ruleset (v2021-04-20)
FG version, extensions, etc.: Beats me, I'm not the GM and there's no way to check your version during a session (no F1/Help button).
Every few minutes after logging in, i get a long string of 'thumbnail image' references followed by the classic "Frame tabs contains out-of-range values in BottomLeft." Kicked back to the launcher. Tried clear/reset options, tried reinstalling. Thought it was due to using an imported D&D Beyond XML character file at first, but creating a new character from scratch didn't help; still get kicked within 5 minutes of login.

If you are the only person getting kicked from the GM's game; it is almost always some security software on either your machine, your router or your Internet account that is killing the connection.
Make sure that FG is included in any Firewall rules on your machine; verify that you don't have any special security firewalls or controls set up to block stuff on your router; and make sure any "advanced security" option from your Internet provider is either off or enabled to allow connections from the GM.
This error message in your log indicates that something is forcefully breaking the connection:
[4/24/2021 2:59:50 PM] Noble Connect [344355]: Socket receive operation was interrupted, likely due to the socket being closed

Also, if you continue to have issues we'll need the logs from both the GM and player machine to investigate.

Two of the other players both said "Firewall and antivirus" in response to this, telling me that if I want to run Fantasy Grounds I should figure out how my firewall and anti-virus program works and shut it down. That seems... both unwise and very unlikely, i.e., not gonna happen.
I have McAfee LiveSafe. It has a settings tab called "Firewall" that currently reads ON, and I'm not gonna flip it to OFF just to play D&D. If FG can't operate with an antivirus/firewall program in place, then I'm better off without Fantasy Grounds.

You should create an exception for Fantasy Grounds Unity in that setting, not turning it off. Turning it off would only be for testing.
Offtopic about security:
Windows Defender is for Windows 10 btw normally sufficient. You also probably have a firewall in your router which blocks packets from the WAN going into your local network.
Most security problems sit in front of the computer (in general, not you personally).

Windows Firewall is free and just as good as the McAfee stuff (probably better) - and you can add an exception to the firewall. Like your co-players said, figure out how to use your firewall, there are free online guides on how to set exceptions. The Anti-virus is the thing thats not co-operating, not FantasyGrounds.
Just a quick add - most paid for firewalls are just a way the bods who sell PCs get extra commission (sales bonus) and are useless software. Windows firewall is perfectly secure for most users, the idea that you are safe behind a firewall because you paid for it is a scam. A real hacker can get past those things in seconds. Also, anything you find online that "speeds up your PC" is 100% going to slow it down. Especially those browser addons. I can't tell you the amount of times I have fixed (Windows) PCs that had loads of "booster" software on it that also allowed 10,000 viruses onto the PC.

Personally, I never shut down AV or Firewalls (other than for test). Doing so often just "freezes" port and other settings since many Firewalls view that as a potential attack. You want to make an exception for FG and work with your firewall or AV to solve the problem instead of trying to fight with the security software.

The session's over now, so there's no way to test the changes (no game to log into), but we'll see what happens if I wind up in another Fantasy Grounds game. Thanks for the input, all.

Do you use Comcast? I have had issues with their "advanced security".
