Clarification of the use of the Feats for character cujstomization

My reading of the description of Feats in the PHB, pg. 165, is that at certain levels where you would be allowed to use 2 ability score increase points, you are allowed to take a Feat instead, giving up both of the ability score points. Some of my players think that you only need to give up one of the ability score points in order to take a Feat. Which is the correct interpretation?

You are correct.

You can either take an ability score increase or forgo that altogether to take a feat instead.

There are some feats that still give you a +1 in an ability score along with the rest of the feat's ability, but that is noted under each applicable feat.
