Something that hasn't worked quite right for our group: initiative & the combat tracker. We originally started with FG doing all of the rolls, but the players felt somewhat detached from the process. They missed "rolling for intiiative". But this is where the wrinkle comes in for us: when it's time to start the combat, we have to all roll for initiative, and then the GM has to move the arrow to the "new" first person. And then we do that again after every completed combat round.

As an idea, what I'd like to see for the combat tracker is a "top of the round" entry which will pause and wait for all players to roll initiative (and perhaps all NPCs auto-roll). When the last initiative roll is done, auto-advance to the first actor (or even wait until the gm clicks the next arrow to manually step to the first actor).

Or... am I missing some combination of features that would let us accomplish this? (Ah, in case it matters, 5e D&D)

Good Day Imagix :)
There is a selection in the Options under Combat (GM) for Turn: Stop at round start that gives an On/Off option. It is defaulted to Off. Perhaps that is what you are looking for? :)

No, you aren't missing anything. If you do things manually then what you are doing sounds about right.

You're rolling for initiative every round?

We manually roll for initiative for the first round, then after that we let FG re-roll initiative each round. Its a good compromise for us. But as mentioned you can try the stop on turn start option.

Yep. We like a little bit of uncertainty. Though probably more of a holdover from when we played earlier versions.

Do what Bonkon mentions - set the "Turn: Stop at round start" campaign option. You'll be prompted in chat when the initiative turn is advanced from the last actor at the end of the round, and the turn indicator will disappear. Then roll for initiative and click the "Next Actor" button on the combat tracker and it will advanced to the new highest initiative for the next round.

If you make use of a lot of effects, keep in mind that duration will reduce on a fixed initiative value set when the effect is added. So some short durations (like start of next turn) may expire on a different initiative slot that you expect.

We kind of like this, it adds to the chaos and uncertainty of combat :)
