Using Dice Expressions for character actions(attacks)

So I want to give a player a weapon that uses exploding d6's for damage dice but I can seem to add a dice expression to the dice field in the weapon info pane of the action tab.

Is this not supported?

Not yet. I believe dice expressions are only currently supported in the chat. All the rulesets are currently being updated, I believe supporting dice expressions everywhere is part of the update. The current plan is for these to be pushed to live/production February 16. So pretty soon.

But please do not switch to the dev channel. You are likely to corrupt your campaign data if you do not know what you are doing. Plus things don't work there yet, they are in development :)

Integrating dice expressions is part of the ruleset coding; and is a very complex project. It is not part of the February updates, and is not currently scheduled. There are other higher-level projects that are taking priority at this point. (vision/lighting, forge)

Allowing Dice Expressions with all the other stuff that goes on in rulesets like 5E ad PF/SF would be a significant undertaking.
