View Full Version : searching assets causes 30 second hang

To be fair - I have a large amount of purchased content - including the FG art sub. The problem I'm running into is when I go to find a map or spell template I can't just search for what I want - because that produces a very long 'spinning wheel' hang - the program *does* come back but cpu and disk usage don't spike or show any other indication that there is a problem.
Of course - the results show folders and if I want to browse I look - and then 'back' out - which resets the filter - causing me to need to filter again if I want to eliminate scrolling through page after page of stuff.
I've only tested this on image and tokens within the asset window - but both produce the same behavior - I really wish there was a way to only show art/assets I plan to use for my game and not every module I bought - while the ability to see all of it is handy - most of the time I'd rather have a curated list so I can quickly find something.

How long is the word you're searching on? 3 or less will cause long display of search result times - the longer the name, the quicker the display of results.
More info in this thread: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?65299-Asset-window-performance-issues As you can see, the devs are aware and are looking for ways to improve this.

Thanks - I was looking for something to match my experience and I just didn't find it - my search terms are generally shorter - like "map" and "20 foot" for example. I wonder if it'd be possible to create a 'virtual' campaign folder you could drag and drop assets into that would let you curate a single folder (with sub folders or whatever) linking the assets you wanted instead of the live view. I guess that's more of a feature request at this point - but I don't know what solutions they've considered - re-writing the asset loading code seems like a larger task - but I'm also not the programmer that has to do it so :)

For assets a USED option (next to Token, Portrait, Image, All - that shows assets already used on the map.... for the bookmark. Cant comment on that one for some reason.

Are you logged in to Idea Informer? I notice that sometimes it logs me out when I return a few days later.

Yeah it logs me in and out too!
Here I expanded on my idea to make it more clear

Used shows assets you have already used on the current map so it populates as you go.

This is very similar to my own issues. FGU was fine-tuned to make indexing and caching balanced. It used to hang longer, but it has improved much since. I do not think any platform or Unity based application will let us or allow for us to easily wade through a ton of content. Have you ever searched into a windows folder with a ton of content? On my machine it takes it about 30 seconds to scan through all the files, photos, and media types. I think this is more of a windows data access and indexing limitation. Even if you have 256GB of fast RAM, and a super fast new gen M.2 SSD hard drive, we are still going to be limited by the architecture of the operating system. Quantum computing is around the corner. Until the internet, and operating systems can be brought up to speed, we will be limited in options. Unity might be able to squeeze or shave a few seconds off the wait time, but i doubt it will get much better.
