I am fairly new to Savage Worlds and I am experimenting making characters to understand Powers. I made a human and gave him an arcane background. I gave him the Spellcasting skill. He has a d6 for ability die in his Spellcasting skill. On the Powers tab of the record sheet however, it shows a d4 and a -2 penalty on the powers I picked for him. Shouldn't the casting die under the Powers tab match the die you have in the Spellcasting skill? I don't understand how the casting die ever raises to a higher die and where the penalty comes from...what am I missing? Thank you for any information on this.

*OK, I just figured out that each arcane background required an arcane skill. That accounts for the penalty. I also found out the power's die will match the arcane skill die. I guess I answered my own question. Still, if anyone has any advice on if it's better to go with power points or without, that would be appreciated too!*

Use power points :)

I would go with power points as well. I tried a couple of games without PP. It didn't work as well. The caveat being a setting built around no PP (like a supers game). But try a one-shot without PP for the experience. That gave me insights into how powers work.
