View Full Version : Random NPC hit points and is it just that I never noticed sheet?

I was in the middle of testing something when I noticed that the NPC sheet HP was not changing with a modified HP in combat tracker (FGU). I then tested in pure no extensions FGU and with NPC random HP option the combat tracker HP differed from the NPC sheet the link brings up.
I assume its always been this way - and I just never noticed.
Want to make sure. Was this always this way? I get why it would be that way as NPC sheet is a many (CT) to one (sheet) while a PC is one (CT) to one (sheet) with the HP linked into that sheet. But it was disconcerting when I noticed. In standard FGU with a static NPC HP it will of course always match.
This is more asking to make sure it's always been this way and not some sort of issue - as I've never noticed it before.

There is an option in options which allows for NPC hit points to be fixed, random or maxed. So if an NPC's hit points show 10 (2d10) then you'll get 10 with fixed, 20 with max and a random number between 2 and 20 if set to random. This only gets calculated when the NPC is first placed on the CT.

So are you saying that the NPC sheet HP value has always been different from the Combat tracker value when you bring up the NPC sheet link on it? That was my question. I'm not sure how to interpret your answer in regards to that as it seems to be telling me something I already know and stated (at least the random part which shows this behavior).

Assuming we're talking about D&D 5e here...
The HP field in the CT is different from the field in the NPC sheet.
From a Goblin added to the CT:
<hd type="string">(2d6)</hd>
<hp type="number">7</hp>
<hptotal type="number">5</hptotal>
hptotal is the HP displayed in the combat tracker. The other two fields are what is displayed in the NPC sheet.
And once an NPC sheet is added to the CT it is a local copy specific to that NPC record in the CT, it is not a one->many relationship. The setup allows you to drag/drop the first creature added, to create a new record that will roll new HP (or keep the original "hp" field value if rolling has been disabled since the creature was originally added to the CT).
It's been like that for a very long time. There are the two reference fields - "hd" is used for random or max HP, "hp" for standard HP - and then one of these two fields is used to populate the actual "hptotal" field in the combat tracker when the NPC is added.

Thanks - just never noticed - and when I clicked on CT NPC link having it come up with a sheet with a different HP was disconcerting. Purely from a user perspective.
