I was informed by my players that the status of their dying characters is now showing up in the combat tracker. You can tell if someone is at dying 1 or dying 2 as an example. In my game we do death saves in the tower to not give away a characters dying status to create suspense when someone goes down. I believe this is a new change. Was this added in a recent update and can it be disabled?

I can't reproduce this. The dying status has never, as far as I'm aware shown up on the Combat Tracker, and it still doesn't (as of the last release (3rd Dec). It will show up in chat if not rolled into the Dice Tower but rolling into the dice tower doesn't show the result to the player (apart from the obvious tick which appears in the tick box of course). Are you perhaps using any extensions? Can you reproduce in a new campaign without extensions?

This is a new campaign no extensions loaded. This is from the player perspective. You will notice the progression in the images as the character goes from Dying to Dying (1) to Dying (2) in both the combat tracker and visibly on the hover over. This makes concealing the dying role meaningless as it shows exactly what level of failure the character has rolled in two places. To my knowledge this is a "new" thing, it was not like this before. Someone likely thought it a good idea as an enhancement, but it takes away from my game as we like the suspense of not alerting everyone to where a player stands on death rolls.

Ah, right. Well of course I was looking at the CT the way I have it set which is not the way you have it set. I set the View: Health -Ally to detailed rather than status. In that case it doesn't show Dying - just the unconscious effect. I'm pretty sure that this has been the case for quite some time - it isn't a recent change. At any rate if you don't want your players to know then switch off status and have it set to either off or detailed. (I have to say that I can't really see where the tension is here since the tick boxes get ticked off at the same time as the roll result - so the tension can only last a few milliseconds).

Prior to recently, the other players (not the person rolling) only saw dying. The player rolling always realizes what the roll outcome was. It’s really about the other party members not knowing if they are at dying 1, 2. Now, it’s obvious to all what the hidden role was as it either increments the status to a dying 1 or 2, or it doesn’t, which is obviously a success. Wanton turning off both the combat tracker status and the token health status is a major change to the party, especially the token, which then players have no idea who is wounded and at what level.
This is not about YOU or the way you use the status, it’s about me and my players and what we enjoy.
I ask again to the dev team.
1. Was this recently implemented? (I know it had to be within the last week or two).
2. Why?
3. Can the token and combat tracker report simply dying (like it used to) when I choose to only show status?

This has not been changed in over a year. I have the SVN logs for the rulesets that are used to feed the patch system.

I wonder if there wasn't an extension that was altering the dying display, which has either been changed or been removed and now the standard vanilla Dying display is coming through as there is no extension to stop it.

Can any other person confirm seeing the conditions dying 1 or dying 2 in the combat tracker or health dot for any length of time prior to recently? I know Moon said there’s been no changes, but my group are seeing a change now for sure.

The default options for PC health visibility is Detailed, not Status. As far as I know, it has always shown the full status for PCs with regards to Dying stabilization failures when using Status option.
