View Full Version : I have no idea how to even describe this problem. Menu just doesn't load?

So, I've been trying to do a session zero with my players. Teach them how to use Unity, make characters, ETC. We were doing fine for an hour, and then after plugging in my ethernet cable to fix connection issues, I lost connection to the cloud servers and was unable to reconnect. I relaunched the program only for Windows to tell me it's incompatible and to talk to the publisher. I fix that issue after googling it by deleting the exe, opening the updater, and updating. That all worked, and the game runs again, except...
This happens when I run it, through the updater, steam, or clicking the exe myself.

I ran force update by getting into the settings from the updater and this happened... Issue not resolved.

Check your security software. Something is blocking you from downloading.

I don't have security software.

Windows? Mac? Linux? What version?
What version of FG?
What does your FG logs show? (found in FG Data folder)
What do your system logs show?

Windows 10
4.0.4
Which log file do you need? None of them seem to just be standard log besides the console
And which system logs? I'm only mostly tech savvy. I tend to learn things as they stop working as intended.

Update: I may have found a solution. I Earlier during all this mess, what made me need to delete and redownload the EXE was becuase Windows suddenly DECIDED to revoke access to the exe, and giving access back to it didn't fix it. I have just discovered the two files in the second screenshot didn't have ANY security permissions and gave myself them. Hoping this fixes it.

Yes. Changing the access to those two files to give my account access fixed the problem and FG now runs as intended. Hope this helps anyone else who's operating system decides to be incredibly stupid.

<FG Data Folder>/FGUpdaterEngine.log, console.log, network.log
<FG Application Folder>/FantasyGroundsUpdater.log, FGUpdaterEngine.log
Then open the Windows Event Viewer. Open the Windows Logs > Application
See if there are any Errors around the time you try to run the program.
Repeat with the Windows Logs > System logs.

So, uh, I have a new problem now. After I verified it was working upon fixing those two files, I closed the program to do some other things. Upon opening it again, I now get stuck on the logo screen and do not load into the menu.
As for those logs, I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for in event viewer. but none of the FG logs have any time stamps that are recent any time I open it. None of them have updated their logs since the error preventing me from getting past the logo started happening.

So, after spending forever trying to figure out what's wrong and fixing it, I decided to delete the entire app directory and have it rebuild by reinstalling. This worked, and the game makes it to the main menu now. Unfortunately, I have lost my campaign, what little has been set up so far, during my multitude of repair attempts tonight. I would really love to know what made my computer decide that the four affected files didn't need access permissions so that it never happens again.

Hmm, I don't know what was causing it in the first place. You campaign data may still be saved. Campaigns are stored in your FG Data folder. By default a reinstall does not delete those folders, so by chance are they still around? If you are using a different FG Data folder now, you can copy them from their old location into the new one.

Everything in the data folder got deleted when in the very early trial and error portion I hit uninstall from FG's settings. It told me it wouldn't delete them, but it did anyway when I clicked finish.

Did you change the default installation directories? FG uses two different locations - the application installation files (app .exe and other support files) and the app data directory (where all of your campaign and other info goes). The defaults are different directories and the app data doesn't get deleted on uninstall, only the installation files directory.

Yes. I put the app folder under d/games/fantasy grounds unity and data was closer to where I keep my images and stuff for world files, in the picture library.
