but LAN connection was much faster and even functioned when the server was down- so what can I do to get a LAN connection running again?

Doesn't hurt to reset your router.. but other then that I wouldn't know.. it took me real long to set up port-forwarding from my end too..
What type of computer does he have a mac or a pc.. and the other people in your group that can connect do they have a pc or mac.

Read the Connections Explained thread.

Most likely culprits are;
- your internal IP address has changed and you need to update your port forwarding rule
- your network connection is no longer private and Windows is blocking the connection
- your security software is now blocking inbound connections
- you have Advanced Security provided by your ISP, see Advanced Security thread
- your ISP has switched to IPv6 and your port forwarding rule is for IPv4

LAN mode requires port forwarding to be working fully on the GM's connection to the Internet (through all gateways), and for the connection not to be blocked for some reason on either users network.

This was the whole reason why we built and maintain servers to offer the Cloud mode, so that network facilitation can be done automatically. If a direct connection can be established, then it will be. If not, then a relay will be used. It should only be slower in scenarios where a relay is required; but the relay is only required if port forwarding can't be configured automatically by the library we use.

Due to the huge amount of individual complexity and uniqueness of every person's network and Internet service provider; on FGU, we tell everyone to use Cloud mode, and we do not provide official support for port forwarding.
