View Full Version : How to disable LOS for the NPCs?

I recently upgraded my tables to FGU, I am satisfied with the program in general, but I have encountered performance issues when there are too many tokens on the map. I believe that the reason for the slow processing is related to the amount of calculations required for the LOS of each of the individual tokens. A simple solution to this problem would be to disable LOS for the NPC tokens, since I don't need it, it would be primarily a useful feature for PCs, but unnecessary for me as a GM. Is there any way to do this?

No; it's all or nothing. Either the LoS is on or off for all tokens. The DM does need it as well since the Line of Site rules apply equally to NPCs and to player characters.

Note, one thing some folks think to do is to add all tokens for an entire map at one point in time. In FG, this is generally not good practice. Only add tokens to the map and Combat Tracker close to the time that those NPCs will actually be engaged with the party/PCs. This is something Encounters can help with.

How many tokens are on the map when you encounter this issue?

There were twelve tokens: a party of 6 PCs, 1 familiar, 4 summoned beasts (I hate conjure animals!) and 1 NPC totally outnumbered. The encounter was in a forest, I do not know if the number of trees would influence the processing, since each tree trunk offered cover.

Maybe try masking the areas that the actors are not in?
Not every area - just mask the whole thing and unmask a square around the action?

It was just a battle map, the action was spread across the map, it's a small map just for this encounter. Anyway, I appreciate the help, it was the first time that we tested FGU, I believe I still don’t have enough data to judge the problem, it could have been the internet, or a spike in memory, or something else - I’ll check the performance in the next sections , try to understand when slowness occurs to better determine the problem.

FGU definitely seems to be a lot more demanding than FGC...

I think it could still be a good option, but does it really impact a lot? Because it looks like that the LoS is only calculated for the NPCs when one clicks on their token :) When it indeed impacts a lot, then I would also appreciate such an option, especially for situations with many NPCs, and LoS can often be quickly done manually (I mean one just needs to do it for one/two of the NPCs to determine that kind of stuff, not for all). I think of you, the gargoyles at the amphitheatre at the end of Storm King's Thunder :D (For context: in that battle, are a loooot of gargoyles, would be nice when this is then not laggy as hell due to LoS :D Though on that kind of map one could even turn off the LoS at all. I didn't test that map though)
