Heya

We are currently playing classic and one of my players recently asked why do area effects are not applied automatically in FG.

We were able to apply and remove an area effect centered on him manually on the combat tracker / he could do it by applying and removing it there to others within the combat tracker but he asked why is this not automated and I assumed and replied that the map and combat tracker do not share location / distance data.

Is this correct?

And if so, how is this in FG unity implemented?

I think you might be looking for something like this.

The catch is if you have a NPC on one side of a wall and a fireball was cast on the other side according to the map the NPC would get hit by it but because the wall was blocking they would not. Now with the LOS in FGU maybe that could be worked around. Same thing would apply if a NPC was flying 100 feet over the heads of the player. 3D positioning in a 2D system can be challenging.

It doesn't do it automatically because it hasn't been programmed into the ruleset. Not everything is automated.
