Why isn't anything updated? I have been trying to find info on Unity to learn how to use it but it takes so long to maybe find something that I give up. I spent the money to get the Ultimate Unity but still can't use it at all. I have gotten no help from Fantasy Grounds except pointing me to old non updated videos that don't help at all!!

Welcome to the FG forums ATN. Sorry you're not making much progress.

There are some good links on the main startup screen of FGU.

There is also a lot of information in Wiki: https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGU/overview

If you have any specific problems then please let us know what those are so that we can point you in the right direction or assist directly.

I decided just follow the links without any prior knowledge (Hard to do but trying to give an honest UX appraisal here).

It turns out there does appear to be an issue here that needs looked at. The wiki appears to be out of date in places. Following the links from the start page. It easy for a newcomer to get lost in there. Some "basic guides" are 6 years old. The Xorn stuff is listed from 2008. If you scroll down you can find the last code changes pointing to latest update news but it easy to miss this.

If we look at the actual wiki code. It is getting updated. If it is getting slightly old in places that is to be expected in a softwear project under active development. It just might need some more QA love to cut the old stuff or move new help to the top of the page.

I can't use Unity at all! All I get are "Look at the video's". I need some help to get started. Either Discord or contact of your choice. I can't open a map and put a character on it even. I want to learn the system so I can DM the next game we play as we are going to start using Pathfinder 2E. I used Roll20 first but FG offers so much more that I switched - at least I could start playing Roll20 immediately and use what I paid for but Unity I can't even begin!!

TY for answering. Still can't do anything so everyone that answered didn't help at all really. You did seem the nicest (Lonewolf).

I started with https://fantasygroundscollege.net/ which was a huge help for me. They have classes starting with the most basic use of the system to more advanced coding classes. Important to note that they focus on Fantasy Grounds Classic, at least until Unity is fully released. Honestly, both are similar enough that when I moved it Unity, it was simple.

There are loads of videos on Youtube showing how to use it. The videos for FG Classic are still relevant for Unity for the most part, especially if you are an absolute beginner to FantasyGrounds. Matt Colville did some great videos on combat for example.

Perhaps the best solution would be to join a game as a player and learn the basic hands on, then move onto the other side as DM for creating and running games.

Head over to the official discord channel and ask anything in the FGu support channel and we can help get you started. https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?36377-Official-Discord-Server

We have been teaching Unity classes for months now and are just now starting to teach Map classes for Unity now that it's released. Just wanted to update that, as it's incorrect.

Ok, I understand you don't find video helpful. Not everyone finds that method of learning useful. What I suggest you do is :

1) Get yourself on Discord. Both at the official server and Fantasy Grounds Collage.

2) Create an account at https://fantasygroundscollege.net and sign up for classes that appeal to you. Depending on where you live Time Zones may limit choices however try it out.

3) The classes format is an online tutorial via Discord. The perk is unlike a video the whole thing is interactive. Ask questions. Lots of questions. Don't be afraid to speak up because everyone else in the class wants to know the answers too.

4) Network with people that are in the same boat as you. Watch out for fellow classmates. Your not alone. The community in general is very supportive of new players.

Also note as general rule. Unity functionality and layout is usually identical for every game system. It doers not matter what game system you end up using. Having someone walk you through what each tab and button does. Will get you 90% of the way to starting your own game in any game system. So even if you want to play Pathfinder. Sign up to play other games and tell people you want to learn. Every game is useful for learning the basics.

Another point that worth remembering. There is huge overlap been the old and new versions of Fanatsy Grounds. Again the user discriptions and functionality is going to appear to be the same. So even if someone shows something on Classic. It will usually work the same way in the Unity version. There is subtle differences but right now as leaning the basics go. Lessons on either are useful. So it is not critical to stick to Unity only lessons just yet.

Good luck !

Hello!

Others have already mentioned many places, where you can find help - Discord channel, wiki, FG College. Do try them out!

But if it's even creating a campaign to try everything out that you've got a problem with, do this to get yourself started: open FGU, click on Create Campaign button. It will open a window, where you can choose the name of the campaign, rulesets, password, server type, extensions and list your IPs. For testing things out, I recommend choosing LAN option. When you like the setup, click start and it should run the game for you. You can later open your game in the Load Campaign menu.

Also, if you want to learn and try FGU out, there's 5E Sample Campaign in the Load Campaign menu that you can load and it has basic info on how FGU runs.

Hope it helps!

I'm not sure if this is available in FG Unity yet, only Classic at this point. At least it's not available in my FGU installation.

For whatever reason the 5e sample campaign doesn't load for everyone. At least historically it didn't. It may well do now.

It should be installed on a new installation; but is not copied to non-Live channels if you use those (no campaigns are copied when changing channels by design).

If it's not being installed, please let us know, and whether you had previously installed FGU and how you un-installed it.
