View Full Version : World Atlas Entries

I did use the search feature to look for an answer to this question and could not find anything using the search terms I entered.

I am a world building GM/DM. I realize FG is not really designed for the purpose of world building. However, I've made the decision to try and enter as much information about my game world as possible into FG. I am wondering if it is possible, or maybe already exists the capability to add a separate sidebar button titled "Atlas" with a corresponding Atlas Entry. It would, in my view, be identical to the Story entry, but have it's own database fields/entry(s).

Ideal state would be to have a short data entry template with something like: Name, type of entry, and a text entry box. The type of entry field would be a drop down that is a (sub)-category for the information (Is this a City, Region, Point of Interest, or Religion Entry?) As an example.

Right now, I'm using story entries to accomplish this. I'm just wondering if there's an already an existing extension or capability to create one, to fill this request. I'm currently using FGC but may be switching over to FGU within the next two weeks. I am working in the 5E rule set.

And yes, I know about tool sets like World Anvil and others for campaign organization. However i am, A) Trying to consolidate my data sources to make it easier on me and my players, and B) Don't want to have to pay subscription fees for every cool tool out there...I'll be broke quick.

Here's a couple images of what I'm doing right now so you can maybe see a little better what I'm asking for:

Right now, I'm using a (City Name - Region) naming convention. This allows me to refine certain searches. So if I want to see all the cities is the region of Nysia, I can just type Nysia in the search bar. I would prefer to be able to use sub-categories, but I don't know if there's a way to do this in FG.

Doh! I have player agency installed so my players could take notes, in game. Completely forgot about the world builder part of it! This is a little more in depth than I thought possible but this will absolutely work for what I'm doing! Thanks very much for the push in the right direction. Not sure why I didn't see this in my search, but thank you again!

So i notice more than a couple posts where people ask about wanting to make their own data categories in FG. Particularly for larger ongoing campaigns that get complex and have two+ years worth of player data build up.

Is this just not a user function in FG's design, and to do so will always demand after market parts?
Or is it anticipated that FG will allow GMs to have their own organizational schemas?

Everything you buy in a formal professional product you can create at home for your own campaigns. This includes nested and linked campaign maps (you can have a kingdom map, with pins for regions and cities, then pins on those for the NPCs and other entries that players would know about as well as for images). You can add as much or little detail to your NPC entries. You can use story and now World Builder to track factions, places, etc. Because of the way FG does linking, you can connect a story entry to every other related entry you mention during it (just like a wiki entry with links to all the topics mentioned on that one entry).

It isn't as pretty as something like Obsidian Portal, Campfire, or World Anvil, but it does all the same stuff.

And you can then export only the parts you want to share as a module and give it to your players so they can explore it at their leisure.
