See title. Running Windows 7, got Unity to install, joined a game, DM even showed me as connected, but all I ever got was the program background image... no windows, buttons, functionality of any kind, not even a right-click menu. The log icon did work, and through multiple attempts it sometimes showed several 'unexpected command ____ loading server files' or something along those lines, but not always. In some attempts the log looked like everything should be working fine, but nothing was working.

Note that Microsoft no longer supports Windows 7. It reached end of life January 20th. You really should update.

Coming from an Anti-Virus/Security software developer history, yes, absolutely get off Windows 7 ASAP.

Unfortunately, I don't posess enough technical knowledge to effectively stop Win10 from phoning home and strip it of cortana. With those "features" intact it's more resource hogging malware than operating system.

Windows 10 is rather light weight. I wouldn't call it a resource hog at all. If you don't want the telemetry, that's a more valid concern. I choose to use it as is, but if you want it to stop phoning home, here are some good sites:
https://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-10/how-to-disable-windows-10-telemetry/
https://winaero.com/how-to-disable-telemetry-and-data-collection-in-windows-10/
But please, don't use Windows 7 connected to the internet anymore. It's just not safe. You'll be part of a botnet or get your data encrypted. If you don't want Windows 10, go Apple.

Thanks. As far as light weight, it can be with cortana properly eviscerated, but I've seen too many computers with more powerful hardware than mine running like slugs for basic tasks in 10. And I'd be more inclined to go Linux than Crapple... flat out despise that company's business practices.
But at this point I feel like we're getting a bit far OT.
