FGU was deleted by my antivirus (windows defender).

last install was made at 14/10/2020

One concern about this install is an unexpected download of files from onedrive of unrequested files began when installed fantasygrounds unity using compatibility mode, since the normal install fails. Even that the machine has Visual C++ runtime installed, FG didn't recognized the software in the machine and this unexpected behaivor surfaced. Since the first trial of the software install failed because of lack of rights in the directory in the update stage, it is not visible to the user that Visual C++ runtime was not really installed nor recognized.

Make sure that you set an exception in your anti virus program before you try to re-install. You shouldn't need to use compatibility mode to install FG. What version of windows are you using?

Are you saying the installer downloaded files from OneDrive?
FGU is compatible with Windows 10, in fact Windows 10 is recommended. There is no reason to run in compatibility mode
I suggest downloading a new copy of the installer (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/FGUWebInstall.exe) and trying again

Are you sure you didn't have a virus? WIndows defender isn't very good.

Actually it is one of the best out there https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/

Operative system: Windows 10

First Anti-virus intervention: Kaspersky (player computer)

Second Anti-virus interventiom: Windows Defender (my computer GM)

Other of my players, have a CPU for testing that keeps clean, at the moment the instalation finish and run FGU this behavior start, donwloading OneDrive archive without the intervention of the user, this strat to happen the 14/10/2020 GMT:-6 19:00

Why we use the compatibility mode: The updater keeps having problems at the moment of instalation, and the instalition of the C++ in the instaler crashes several times in our attempts to install.

With the number of people seeing this, I am seeing a common thread. A lot of the people experiencing the issue seem to be running the Single Language Edition of Win10.

If edcasasa is the same as Eddy on Discord, the screen shot that was posted to discord looks to be Spanish, so I am curious if the Single Language Edition of Win10 is being used.

I only run Windows Defender (as Egheal says it is one of the best ones out there, and it is free and does not hog resources) on Windows 10.

I run Win10 Pro, so I am not seeing the same issues. As a test, I spun up a VM just now with Win10 Pro version 2004, and updated it fully, then downloaded the installer and ran it. I am not seeing any issues with Windows Defender and FGU on the VM.

I even manually scanned the FantasyGrounds.exe, FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe, and FGUpdaterEngine.exe and found no threats. I also scanned the Installation Folder (C:\Program Files\SmiteWorks) and the Data Directory (%appdata%\SmiteWorks) and again they came up clean.

I am really curious if the SLE version is doing something strange behind the scenes and causing issues with the FGU installer.

Yes, I had this happen to me as well, also using Kaspersky Total Security.

Strangely, it didn't happen when I was updating, it happened when I was in the process of connecting as a player to someone else (although I did run the update utility just before connecting).

I made exceptions in Kaspersky (boy they hide where to do that pretty well in my version...) and had to reinstall - this reinstall made me first install C++ which is strange because FGU has been on my computer since the Kickstarter early access release - working fine that whole time - so I don't know why it needed to reinstall C++ now (plus, I never had to install it in the first place).

I do not use Compatibility Mode. Haven't had any issue since, but haven't used FGU a whole heck of a lot either (launched it perhaps 3 times since then).

Kaspersky has been a complete rock solid AV for me for over 10 years now - first time I've ever had it react this way about anything.

Sorry, I was not clear. I do not think the issue is specific to any particular language.

I think it is more of an issue with the Single Language Edition of Windows 10. That seems to be the common thread.

Now, I am not one of the devs, so this is just an observation based on posts here and on discord of people experiencing issues with the installer, quite a number of them have mentioned they are using the SLE version of Win10.

The installer was updated a couple of weeks ago to always run the C++ runtime installer in passive mode .. the C++ runtime installer only installs the runtime if its not already installed. That change seemed to cause more problems than it fixed so it was rolled back last week. If you are having problems installing FGU, I highly suggest downloading the installer again from the website and trying again (see post #3 for link).

Add an exclusion for the FGU installation directory to your antivirus software.

Make sure the Users group has write permissions on the FGU installation directory.

I had Kaspersky delete FGU on Windows 10 when I attempted a localhost connection in LAN mode.

I'm not sure if it's worth adding to this thread but my Avast just flagged the fgu.exe as a threat. I simply created an exception.
