Welcome!
We will need to know more. Do we assume D&D 5e?
If so, see the stickies at the top of the 5E forums. There are videos with info on how to create custom classes plus other useful info.

See the second video linked in this post (I am also assuming 5e) https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?37112-New-Class-Creation-Video

Are you suggesting that you have to create an entire custom class to extend 5E paladin oaths? That seems excessive.

If you want it selectable when you drag a class to the character to level up, then yes. But, if you don't just like anything else, you can just type what you want into any character sheet whenever you want.

Basically, yes. Archetypes don't exist on their own so you need a class in order to attach them to that class. Since you are copying all of the existing information all you are doing in the end is adding in the archetype so you're not having to create a new class from scratch.

Welcome!
You might also want to look at taking a couple of free class at https://fantasygroundscollege.net/events/calendar/. They have a coding class and DM 103 that look like they would help you out.
