I've updated FGU two or three times this afternoon. The last time, it started loading "Update to 5e" with the blue loading bar. I looked away, when I looked back the bar had gone but in the scrolling list was the line "Skipped update to 5e". Is there any significance to this?

There is no specific message I can find like that in the updater code. There is a similar message that can occur if you did not enter your login credentials in the Settings; but it shouldn't apply to the 5E package. Can you run an Update, go to the Settings, go to Troubleshoot tab, click Gather Logs, and provide the zipped up log files here.
