I'm a pretty new GM and I'm looking to use FGU for a virtual tabletop using a TV as an extended screen for my players. Would I need anything other than FG itself and the adventure to run? We have the physical PHB but would we need to purchase it online to use?

You don't 'need' the PHB module in FG but there is only some of the info pre-typed for easy entry if you don't buy it.
Everyone would need Standard licenses or GM can get an Ultimate license (then all players can use demo licenses without limitations).

I'd recommend you try creating a character before session 0 so that you are somewhat familiar with the process (Fantasy Grounds College (https://fantasygroundscollege.net/) is great for this sort of intro).
