Tried to use the FGU Linux build to play with last night, a bit disappointed as it crashed after 30 minutes. Below is the back half of the log. Just out of nowhere the game quit and returned to the launcher.

The log is truncated to the first WARNING.

I moved the dice tower next to the Chat, first warning.

Second WARNING of note is the fact I was playing RIME.

Then "Critically Awesome Essentials Module - 5e Player Tools" which was the only mod I loaded other than the PHB and RIME player guide.

Then "Game server connection was lost." without any sort of warning. At that point I bailed to Windows as we were streaming and I didn't want to risk having a night of crashing.

Last note: I was running Discord and OBS at the same time. My system is an old Autodesk workstation w/32GB of RAM, and I've never had any issues running FGC out of PlayOnLinux. Plenty of Internet speed up and down. No other player in the game had issues.

Any suggestions? I'd like to try again. The only thing I could do different is maybe not stream?

Thanks,
WR

Can you include the first half of the log? It would tell us how you were connected.

Right now, when the connection to the server is lost it does drop back to the launcher so that is expected behavior. It's a side effect of the network facilitation library we are using. But the good news is we are testing some networking changes this week that will add a lot more resilience to games... depending on how the connection was established (direct, punchthrough, or relayed)

smelton

Actually, I'd like to see the network.log file which would have the connection information I need

WilliamRiddle
October 6th, 2020, 02:48
Sorry about that. I removed the user info, below.

Also looks like I didn't grab the network log in time, it overwrote. I'll know to grab it next time, sorry again.

Hope this helps,
WR

OK ... this file has a TON of my personal network data in it. Is there a more secure way of getting this to development?

Reporting - no issues in todays session with the new updates to FGU - just need the mousehwheel sorted so I can start using the map building features! Thanks!!!!

October 10th, 2020, 04:54
Did the latest update from the FGU's GUI button, as normal, and am happy to report that I didn't experience a crash as I did in the previous 4 sessions and to which I posted earlier (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?61261-Linux-Testing&p=546541&viewfull=1#post546541).

So thanks for fixing whatever it was that was causing that ... well done!

But I must also concur with @Jiminimonka, although the mousewheel is no where near as bad as it was with the original release (i.e. wrong direction, and then require a very fast spin to work), it is still not "NORMAL". I say this because I am still spinning the wheel faster than what is considered normal. Normal because within other applications, like say a webbrowser page, I don't have to yonk on the mouse-wheel. There is still something that isn't correct in this, so I'll stop there as I'm sure y'all are working on it.

Nearly there ... keep up the good work!

Just in the LOS thread - I notice that in my linux build the "Spacebar" does not drop a node when used, it does nothing. Enter does make a final node though.

If I try to reconnect after a crash, I get something like "username in use" and I can't get in. The gm can "kill" my connection and then I can get in. The handling of this reconnection could be improved here.

I've been heads down on the network code for the last week and I'm hoping to include it in the next release... one of the improvements, besides adding a ton of resiliency to the host, is the client will timeout after 30 seconds of not receiving any data (on both the gm and player side). Right now its waiting way too long to timeout which is why is says "username in use".

I'm not surprised. I tried Unity on Linux and the SpaceBar is not recognized in "standard configuration". It should be mapped to the equivalent of a fire button, but nothing happend, either in the Editor mode or in Game mode.

Another "known" problem woth Unity+Linux ? https://answers.unity.com/questions/1755282/space-bar-input-not-recognized.html

Bit pants isnt it. I am sure @smelton and co will get it sorted along with the mouse wheel. But Unity need to sort it out in the first place if they are supposed to be a cross platform dev platform.

Hi All,

I can't get past the End-User License Agreement. I have tried scrolling all the way down, clicking "OK", "Cancel", tabbing around to try to get focus on the "OK" button, but nothing works.
I downloaded it today and the version shows: v4.0.0 ULTIMATE (2020-10-08).

Any thoughts?
Thanks.

What is your screen resolution? Did you try to maximize the window? You might have to run the FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe and adjust the FGU Application UI Scale down (under Settings > Basic) if your resolution is too low.

Running Fedora 32. 64-bit. REALLY like this program....

Found one thing I can't seem to get working.

The FGU Application UI Scale. It is at 100. I can move it to 150 and save it. Restart the programs and it is back to 100. I even tried to modify the number directly, but no help.

Am I doing something wrong?

I will take a look at it. You can also scale the UI from the tabletop using a slash command. I believe its /scaleui 150

While I have no issues running FGU using the installer in the first post, I do note that when trying to install via Steam it still comes up with an error (in Steam)

Hello! I have Ubuntu 20.04. Will there be a way to install Fantasy Grouns Unity with just a simple method rather than trying stuff in the command line in the future?

Jiminimonka

Steam is one way, although the typing one command line (which you can copy and paste from the first post in this thread, if you have to) is VERY simple.
Command line is not complex though, and very powerful and efficient, its why we choose Linux over Poopdows (among other things)

I just installed the Steam version and it worked fine for me. Can you check the installation directory (mine was ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Fantasy Grounds Unity) There should at least two files: FGUWebInstall.bin and FGUSteamLauncher. The only difference between the Steam installer and the web installer is the FGUSteamLauncher, which is what runs when you click Play in Steam; all it does is launch FGU if its installed or the FGUWebInstaller.bin if its not.

/mnt/NewTerra/SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/Fantasy Grounds Unity/ is my Steam Directory and it is empty.

I tend not to install games on my system drive because I want the system drive to be as clear as possible (and I used to do the same on Windows too).

Going to install the same directory as you did and report back.

/home/joe/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Fantasy Grounds Unity/ - same results.

Have noticed that playing with masks i am no longer able to use <SHIFT> to freehand the mask reveal / hide areas. Specifically I noticed this issue after watching the latest unity kickstarter video that discussed Fx layers and placing them within certain masked areas of the map. I was experimenting with this, when i realised that any and all masks are not letting me freehand the area of the mask. With FGC this was just a matter of holding <SHIFT> while left-click freehanding the area to mask or reveal. My only option is to use squares / rectangles to mask and reveal. Not ideal. I also tried <CTRL> or <ALT>, and tried using the left button versus the right button. No luck.

Perhaps i'm doing something wrong?

It should be the Shift key to invert the operation (i.e. unmask if masking, mask if unmasking); and the Alt key to get freehand drawing.
I just tried on my development machine (Windows). Is that not what you are seeing?

I'd need to see the complete set of logs in order to see if there is an issue. As soon as you start up FGU, click the button in the upper left corner and then click compile logs and either post them here, PM me or email them to support.

Might have found an issue.

When I use ctrl + mouse wheel to adjust AC on main character page, it changes it up/down 5 points at a time. My DM on Windows got the correct behaviour of 1 up/down.

Does this happen for anyone else?

It should be the Shift key to invert the operation (i.e. unmask if masking, mask if unmasking); and the Alt key to get freehand drawing.
I just tried on my development machine (Windows). Is that not what you are seeing?

Thanks,

Hey there Moon Wizard ... no that is not what i am seeing, and yes I am aware of how the <SHIFT> and <CTRL> shortcut keys worked with FGC for masking / unmasking ... they aren't working for me in FGU. To that end and as i'm not sure if @smelton was wanting my logs?

There isn't one as it doesn't launch the main application. Only the updater even when trying to launch it manually from the command line.

All that is within the FantasyGrounds.x86_64

So fixed this by renaming the old file and running updater manually again which reinstall that file. Works now.... Might have been a bug in the update?

I'm getting the same on the ICRPG ruleset with timers and dc. Mouse wheel is moving up and down in increments of 5

I'm getting the same on the ICRPG ruleset with timers and dc. Mouse wheel is moving up and down in increments of 5

I figure the increment of 5 was the workaround for needing to spin the mouse wheel with more than normal force when interacting with battlemaps, and scrolling through text in stories or charactersheets. Not really ideal as it does mean that mouse wheeling on bits like the AC on a charactersheet will cause it to inc and dec by 5. On the charactersheet this is a pain but can be dealt with by just typing the score change versus mouse wheel changing it. Where it kills though is on the calendar! On the calendar if you want to change the time its accomplished by holding <CTRL> and then mouse wheel on the HOUR and SECONDS ... this is now quite broken as there's no other way to interact with those fields (i.e. can't type in those fields) ... so long story short i still hope they find the bug related to the mouse wheel and remove the inc/dec of 5.

Otherwise i wanted to report an update related to my post above regarding masking:

Update is that i am sort of right. I realised that the masking IS DOING what it is supposed to BUT ONLY so long as i left-click-hold first and then press <ALT>. If I press <ALT> first and then left-click-hold drag it doesn't work. Honestly didn't think that i needed to click before pressing the key ... anyway just letting you know that i now see the difference and can mask as expected.

Been experiencing consistently disconnects with host server like once in 30 min/1 hour.

Also experiencing the app crashing - this happens when:
1. I try to reconnect right after when i get disconnected from host server.
2. Randomly (although less frequent)

So how do i post the game logs? Thanks!

Only current and previous versions of the logs are kept. If you are in game, you can get the logs by opening a the console window ("/console" in chat) and then clicking the Compile Logs button.

Or you can grab the logs out of your directories. There will be a couple in your FG Data folder; network, console, and FGUpdater logs. The network logs are probably the ones that will help the most.

Sometimes the increment is too much, when going thru long lists and zooming in on maps. Maybe this can be lowered if the mousewheel problem is fixed now.

Having options for controlling these settings in the client (along with keybinds, vsync, framework etc.) might be a good solution at some point. Instead of a one install/configuration fits all, the system would allow users to change the settings based on their system and preferences. After the initial implementation it would take some pressure off the dev team.

Running a Test: I'm playing around with a VM remote-in concept for those that have laptops strong enough to get online and control a remote computer, but need more hardware to enjoy LOS, etc. Also, working that same concept, testing a Raspberry Pi 4 remoting into the VM both on local LAN and external.

First Linux Test Run. Running in a virtual machine on the following system:
Windows 10 Pro, 3900X, 32 GB RAM, 5700 XT

Setup Virtual Machine with Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS. 12-thread with 8 GB RAM
System prompts for updates. Updated Ubuntu.
Default system settings puts resolution at 1152x864. Leaving it alone for now.
Download FGU-Linux from this Forum Thread Post #1.
Open Terminal and run the given command.
Installer pops up. Complete installation.
Updater pops up.
Nothing happens, realize I have to click the Update button <<< Should either run automatically, or there should be a prompt/text telling you to click on the Update button.
After update Terms page pops up. Notice all 12 threads immediately all maximize to 100% usage at this point (fans turn on hard).
Click the OK button.
All threads throttle down and level out to roughly 50%. <<< Something with the pop-up pushed the Threads to 100%
Click on Join Campaign.
Type in the IP of my FGU host for a LAN connection (same hardware, native Win10 Pro running; ie. not another Virtual Machine ).
Connects immediately without delay.
Idling for 20 minutes to watch usage. CPU hovers roughly at 50% on all 12 threads.
DM shares "Handrawn_Map" from DM's Guide.
CPU usage jumps and stabilizes at 65-70%.

Shutting down VM. Lowering Thread count to 4. RAM kept at 8 GB.
Initial Join Campaign and idling CPU balanced at 85-88%.
Loaded Cragmaw Map. Enabled LOS. Dropped in the default Cleric.
Moving the Cleric around the map, CPU usage stays at a stable 85-88% without drop.

Shutting down VM. Lowering Thread count to 2. Set RAM to 4 GB.
Expecting 100% CPU and poor experience.
Initial Join Campaign and idling CPU balanced at 92%.
Loaded Cragmaw Map. Enabled LOS. Dropped in the default Cleric.
Moving the Cleric around the map, CPU usage stays at a stable 90-94% without drop.
Load in four more players and a Goblin.
Roll Attack/Damage rolls from both DM side and Player (VM) side. No drop in CPU. Stable, not a flicker.
Drop in FX onto the map > Myst, Ocean, and Blizzard.
CPU stays balanced, doesn't falter, but Rendering does look very poor.
Player (VM) control is still normal, but the visual aspect of the effects is quite poor.
I'm impressed, stunned actually. It's on the border of playable. Especially with FX turned off.

This is what happened to me two different ways, one was a laptop using Mint (Cinnamon) and also a Pixel Slate Chromebook using Linux Beta witchcraft.

Maybe it is the version of Wine causing the issue, since they were both using the latest? I'll have to experiment.

Edit: I had started reading from the most recent, backwards. I have since used the .bin with successful installs on Mint and using the Chromebook. I also ran an HDMI cable to the tv from the computer running both DM and player programs so everyone can see the map. I appreciate that FGU has the fog of war feature.

One of my players just successfully installed FGU on a Mint 19.1 distribution (Ubuntu 16.04 fork). His only source of grief was the mixed character capitalization of the installation file (capital Ii are the worst). Maybe consider offering the download in all lower-case letters? First connection to my server took quite long (or rather his laptop having to compile the downloaded data).

We did a quick connect test (using LAN connection through router port forwarding) and some movement and rolls. Tomorrow we will play on Unity for the first time. As a fallback I will still set up a remote Windows session for him to connect to, just in case that the Linux client might act up too much during gameplay.

Sounds like you have remnants of a previous installation that used the deb installer... Try this and check to make sure you have permissions to the .smiteworks directory:

sudo dpkg -r fantasygroundsinstaller && sudo rm -fr /usr/share/smiteworks && sudo rm -fr ~/.config/smiteworks

chown -R user:user ~/.smiteworks

At the time we were in battlemap chatter but I wasn't doing anything other than listening to the other players turns. So in other words the crashes occurred at random from my point of view as I wasn't actually interacting with FGU at all when the crashes occurred. So they seemed to occur out of the blue from my POV. What were the other players doing, interacting with the battlemap on their turns. Plotting movements, targeting hostiles, etc. Sorry that I've not a pattern to speak of.

Thanks for the additional info. The crash is happening inside Unity, specifically the Mono library ... I was just curious because if I can replicate the issue it's much easier to get a bugfix out of the Unity devs. Couple more questions if you don't mind:

Was there any kind of animation/map layer effects on the battlemap?
Are your display drivers from manufacture or open source?
Are your display drivers up to date?

At the time we were in battlemap chatter but I wasn't doing anything other than listening to the other players turns. So in other words the crashes occurred at random from my point of view as I wasn't actually interacting with FGU at all when the crashes occurred. So they seemed to occur out of the blue from my POV. What were the other players doing, interacting with the battlemap on their turns. Plotting movements, targeting hostiles, etc. Sorry that I've not a pattern to speak of.

This sounds very similar to what's been happening to me. I've been submitting the logs via the email address.

Yes the GM had LOS (second layer on top of background image) going on as well as a FX of myst (terciary layer).

Are your display drivers from manufacture or open source?
From manufacturer:

dagobah@crimsonnib:~/.smiteworks/fantasygrounds$ inxi -G
Graphics: Device-1: NVIDIA GP106GL [Quadro P2000] driver: nvidia v: 450.80.02

We just posted the installer on Steam as well. You should be able to install through Steam if you want to try that. We marked it as requiring Ubuntu 16.04+. Let us know if you have luck with any other versions there.

Do you have any info on 'launch options'? BC the SteamOS port is borked.

the layer that had the mist was NOT masked. Neither was the layer for LOS.

the first crash occurred near the end of a battle, and not long after the GM had drawn on the map (but not directly after that drawing either, meaning i don't think his drawing on the map was a trigger)
What are the interactions via FGU near the 2 events? Hmmm ... that would be character sheet rolls for skill checks, and moving tokens on the map.

So sorry that i can't say there was a specific pattern that i had noted which might have been a trigger (e.g. adding a new token to the map). No, there was no trigger like that.

The one other interaction I can think of was Healing Word being dropped on my characters avatar from the Actions Tab from another player. I don't know if that was from his actions tab to the CT or from his actions tab to the battlemap. Nothing else comes to mind.

Oh **** ... just thought of another. I'm a druid and we were running the DWSI extension for Druids that's FGU compatible. I had just reverted from being wild-shaped as a badger via that extension, and returned to humanoid form ... that happened some minutes before the crash. Maybe that?

@theuduricIV - You also don't need to run FGU via Steam, even if it is SteamOS.

Does FGU show up in your library on Steam? If you go to the Store and do a FantasyGrounds Unity search it will have a button to use the demo.

@theuduricIV - I haven't personally used SteamOS nor tested FGU on it but I'm in the process of setting it up on a laptop so I will have more info shortly... But from what I've seen, it looks looks like a Debian based distro so I would expect the native Linux build of FGU to work on it.

@Jiminimonka,

This seems to happen when the dialog is cancelled on Mac/Linux builds; because the dialog library we use is returning success and empty string path, instead of failure. We'll need to look at patching this long term; but will happen whenever Cancel is pressed on a file dialog until we have a fix.

Obvious. But FGUW...I... is what caused him to mistype the package name several times. Once it's the W, then it's the I, then you accidentally hit shift wrong. This is a feedback thread, we give feedback. There is no good reason why the filename would need upper and lower case letters mixed, just make it all lowercase is what he wished for.

Most *nix terminals these days have autocomplete. If he starts typing the name, he can hit the TAB key and it will autocomplete the remainder of the file or folder name. If there is more than 1 choice it could be, the terminal will usually beep and hitting TAB a second time will list the possibilities for disambiguation. They generally have a history file as well that can be stepped through using the up and down keys. That way, if there's just one thing off, he can arrow up, fix the problem and hit Enter.

No need telling me what my player should do. He successfully installed FGU, I am just reporting what roadblocks he stumbled upon while doing so. It's a sensible request, because having mixed upper- and lower-case in the installation file-name is of no real use.

No need telling me what my player should do.

I wasn't saying he should or shouldn't do anything, and it certainly wasn't my intention to push back against your suggestion.
I was just relaying some perhaps useful information on making use of standard shell features. Info that might make his overall Linux experience better, and maybe someone else's who happens to read through this thread.

It's a sensible request, because having mixed upper- and lower-case in the installation file-name is of no real use.

Right now, it makes it more readable since the file name is all one word. If SW wants to go all lower-case with the name, I would be okay with that if they make judicious use of dashes/underscores to maintain readability.

Since my player failed to install FGU in several tries due to the mixed-case file-name it absolutely was an issue for him. Stating that it is not an issue isn't going to help anyone after the fact, because it is a user-experience that happened. That last capital I got him.

Did it kick you to the launch screen or crash completely?

A "crash to desktop" is said to occur when a program (commonly a video game) unexpectedly quits, abruptly taking the user back to the desktop. Usually, the term is applied only to crashes where no error is displayed, hence all the user sees as a result of the crash is the desktop. Many times there is no apparent action that causes a crash to desktop. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crash_(computing)#Crash_to_desktop)

Basically, I was mid-sentence talking to my players and then I was looking at my wallpaper.
I also had a player who kept getting freezes, but didn't get logs. I'll ask her for logs next session.

Some people say "crash" when they get kicked back to the launcher so I had to ask. In addition, I have yet to see a crash to the desktop that wasn't accompanied by a core dump recorded in the log files; I didn't find one in your set of logs. Either way, I reviewed the logs and the only event I see that fits your description happened at 7:46:21 PM, with the CONNQ error at 7:47:25 PM but that doesn't look like a crash to the desktop - the transition from the VTT to the launcher is logged, and the logs weren't reset which happens when FGU starts up. Did you compile logs immediately after restarting FGU from the crash?

I'd suggest removing everything again as root, then drop back to your normal user and install there. Make sure your normal users is "clean" as well as per earlier instructions."

The installations started, but crashed, saying some file is missing fantasygrounds.desktop

There was an advice on page 21 of this thread,

"You probably should not be installing as root now with the new install process.
I'd suggest removing everything again as root, then drop back to your normal user and install there. Make sure your normal users is "clean" as well as per earlier instructions."

but I don't know what it means.

Did you get it working Adasiek?

Hello linux friends! I recently stumbled into a problem and a solution and I figured I would document it here in case anybody else encounters it in the future. I apologize if this has already been discussed, I'll remove this promptly if that's the case.

I ran FGUInstaller.bin on my Arch PC and after completing the installation wizard, I found that I had booted into a main menu with missing text almost everywhere except in the logs, which made the GUI quite impossible to navigate as you can imagine!

If you encounter this issue, no worries, the solution is very simple. You are just missing the necessary microsoft fonts on your system. In Arch you can install the ttf-ms-fonts package from the AUR. You may have to look up a different package depending on your specific distro.

If you are dual booting linux and windows, you also have the option of creating a sym link pointing to the fonts folder in your windows partition, as described in this article!

Cheers, hopefully this proves helpful to somebody.

Thanks, MattyMutt! I'll track down the Microsoft font packages for different OSes and distros and post them in the Customer Portal. Thanks for sharing your solution!

Hi, unfortunately not, I went through tons of tutorials online,
and I came up to a conclusion that Linux is designed not for me.

I used the following version of Linux:
Linux version 5.4.0-48-generic (buildd@lcy01-amd64-010) (gcc version 9.3.0 (Ubuntu 9.3.0-10ubuntu2)) #52-Ubuntu SMP Thu Sep 10 10:58:49 UTC 2020

Anyways, thank you for your replies

You literally have to open your Ubuntu terminal and paste in

chmod +x ./FGUWebInstall.bin && ./FGUWebInstall.bin (open a terminal in the download folder where you downloaded FGUWebInstall.bin)

Then follow the prompts.

FGU Linux Updating

I've been using FGU on Linux for a while now, and obviously have been hitting CHECK FOR UPDATES on a regular basis. I know it is updating my products, but on Linux is the core FGU engine being updated? On Windows it is, but Linux can be a different animal when it comes to updating applications. I had a problem awhile ago and I was told to reinstall (which did fix the issue) because there was a new "build". If Linux users need to manually upgrade, how do we find out when there is a new build?

Just looking for some clarity on keeping my Linux FGU up to date.

Thanks,
WR

Yes its being updated at the same time as the lesser OS. 4.0.6 is the latest build.

Yeah, it looks to be the same issue.. still working on trying to replicate it. Do you have any additional info that might help with that?

Hey there smelton ... wondering if you've figured this out? I know that you asked if I've anything additional ... sigh! Man I've tried to see if there's a pattern but am not sure. I can tell you that it is a full on crash each time as i can see that FGU and it's process disappear from the systemmonitor/taskmanager. I can also tell you that if I leave FGU running overnight, no interaction, just left running, it'll crash too. To that end i'm attaching logs related to that. On quick glance it seems like the same issue as you are mentioning in the quoted text. I wish I could tell you that these crashes are related to working on adding LOS to battlemaps, or masking, or something related to map making ... but no that isn't it! I wish I could say that it's related to the players moving their tokens on the map ... nope ... because most of the time i'm working on a campaign with ZERO player involvement or ZERO connections from LAN or WAN and I still will experience the crash. That being said, I CAN SAY that most often i'll have noticed the crash after having left FGU alone and running while i walk away from the computer to do real life stuff. Hours later when i come back, it's crashed. Otherwise I can also say that I usually experience the crash during active campaign use as I GM a session. Most of my sessions are 3 hrs. Mid way through, definitely more than 60min, is when the crash happens, to which i've sent logs already. At which point it's myself restarting FGU, reloading the campaign, and the players once more connecting, and we continue on with business as usual.

Apologies that I don't have more to offer.

Exactly the same boat as skj310. Same experiences.

I've moved from Gentoo to Kubuntu (so new install) - no change. Random crashes. I do get more crashes when I DM vs when I am a player. The last time we played over about a 5 hour session, I crashed 4 times. When playing I have crashed at least once per session - similar duration of 5 to 6 hours.

Hello everyone,

I need to interject here to let people know that while we are happy to support Linux as much as possible, we won't be able to spend direct time troubleshooting and replicating issues and problems on all the available variants of Linux. We had just a single support case for an unsupported Linux variant that took roughly half of a week for Steve to setup along with a few days for Derek in Customer Support. Most of that time was in trying to set up a new work environment to replicate the end-user's system. We never were able to recreate and isolate the problem. Our team really wants to help and they would continue to do so; however, as a management decision, we simply cannot spend that much time on unsupported systems. It pulls our team away from other important work that impacts a much larger share of our users -- including other Linux users.

Here are the specs for what we will be officially supporting. Anything beyond that may work, but you install on those platforms at your own risk. There are a lot of experts here on numerous systems, so feel free to try it out and share your results with one another. Just know that we won't be able to provide much assistance beyond the basic level of support for those systems. If you try it on an unsupported system and it doesn't work, please note that we do have a 30-day refund policy.

Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
OS: Ubuntu 16.04+
Processor: 1.6 GHz or higher processor (SSE2 instruction set support)
Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: Graphics card with DX10 (shader model 4.0) capabilities.
Network: Broadband Internet connection
Storage: 2 GB available space
Sound Card: A sound card is required for voice communication using external programs like Google Hangouts, Skype or Discord and for dice sounds.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I hope our reasoning makes sense to you.

Makes perfect sense, it is hard work supporting just a Windows system without Linux and 90000 different distros.

Perhaps a list of the library depencies for FGU Linux would assist people on distros that have issues?

Anyone had any luck running two instances of FGU on Ubuntu?
I want to run one as a GM and one as a player so I can slap the player instance up on the TV for local gaming. I've got the ultimate license so the player instance doesn't need a license at all.
I copied over the ~/.smiteworks directory to a new directory (~/.fgviewer), fired up the binary in there and changed the path to the app and app data folders to new folders (beneath ~/.fgviewer) but I think there's some hard coded paths for the updater or something that caused some issues - both instances appear to be using the same updater? Or something is going on that causing some collision issues between the two instances when it comes to verifying the license and/or obtaining purchased items.

Jiminimonka

You don't need to install it twice. Just launch another instance and the 2nd one will be the player instance. And no need for different data folders etc. Either.

It crashes hard to the desktop. I have compiled the FGU logs and shipped them off a couple of times. I'll wait for smelton's unity bug report to see if that fixes the problem. I'm going back to being a player for a while, so it's not as critical for me right now.

Hey there @lazjen ... hope you catch this post, but can you tell me what extensions that you normally have running when you are GM'ing? As a player i've no extensions running, but as a GM I have quite a few, and when I am working on creating a module or when i'm doing some campaign prep work, I have quite a few extensions loaded. I'll list them below. My thinking is perhaps there's something different between a crash as a player and a crash as a GM. Perhaps if we have an overlap in extensions that we both use, then perhaps we can help figure out if there's another cause other than:

fantasygrounds/UnityPlayer.so

I note the above library because that's the one that i always see at the end of my "Player-prev.log", just before my FGU crashes.

Here are the extensions I normally have loaded when i run a campaign:

5E_Additional_Storage
AdvancedEffects
AudioOverseer
ChangeInitUpdateEffects
coins-weight
CoreButtonsFor5e
DOEBase
DOELocations
DWSI
Fantasy Language Fonts
Font-Ubuntu-FGU
HeroPoints5e
Moon-Tracker
MOTD
Theme_Simple_Brown

I am slowly going through and enabling 1 at a time to see if one causes. Why? Because I've left FGU running for 12hrs with no extensions loaded and it didn't crash. Hence I am wondering if one of the extensions is the cause. So far I've tested these 3 and haven't noted the crash: CoreButtonsFor5e, DOEBase, DOELocations. Tested those 3 first cause I suspected them ... so far they seem to be fine :( .. I'll continue looking.

I've experienced the total crash as a GM in a 5e game. I had only the two D&D Official Font Extensions loaded. Last weekend it happened three times during our three hour session. We had a couple of maps (Two of the split sailboat maps from Ghosts of Saltmarsh) loaded and the combat tracker loaded. Thanks to this thread, I found that I see the same errors as posted upthread in the ~/.config/unity3d/SmiteWorks/Fantasy\ Grounds directory. I've attached the full Player-prev.log if that helps any.

As a test this week, I left those maps open with the combat tracker open and after a few hours it crashed. I then tried to run it in Steam via Proton (quick to test) with the same configuration and it did not crash after 5 hours. I'm a long time Debian (Debian 10) user and have had great success with Unity games running well on this system, so I was surprised by this. I also realize that this distribution is unsupported though, but thought that I could offer some further data. I will most likely try to run my game this weekend on another supported platform. Maybe I can setup a Ubuntu partition to further test later with the same hardware to see if it makes a difference.

For what it's worth, the GPU/Driver Info is:
Renderer: GeForce GTX 1060 6GB/PCIe/SSE2
Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Version: 4.5.0 NVIDIA 418.152.00

I still crash as a player (I think the DM uses a decal extension and that's it), but less frequent than GMing

Ok, for me, I'm using:

5E - AdvancedEffects
5E - Constitutional Amendments
5E - Reliable Talent (I've made some mods to this)
5e - Roll For Initiative Addon (Beta)!
5e - Theogeek's Improved Critical
5e Attunement Tracker
5e Enhancer (I've made some mods to this)
D&D Official Language Fonts - just noticed I've got this listed and selected twice
The Decals from the essentials bundle items
Theme: FG Dark

If you are running the native Linux client, why would you use Proton? Thats for the Windows client.

Correct, but for me the Native Linux client was repeatedly crashing. I was hoping to not have to use Fantasy Grounds on a different platform, so I wanted to test it for comparison.

I just tried the latest version (01-15-2021) and when I try to export a character the program crashes to desktop. I was wondering if there was any new news or things to try for this issue? Thanks.

I have the same issue, the logs do not record any information from the crash that I can see (last entries are module load).

ChromeOS 89.0.4389.16 running a Debian 10 container. I can /export and create module files without issue so basic file system interaction seem to be fine.

Update: /exportchar produces the same crash as the UI button.

Not sure if this is Linux only and it's a minor nitpick....

When in FGUpdaterEngine, I hit "Settings", "Troubleshoot" tab, "Gather Logs". The light grey default text on the selection box says "Filename". Typing a filename just turns the box red with no explanation. A few seconds later the title bar "Choose Export Directory" was noticed and clued me into what the problem was, it wants a folder/directory/whatever name and not a Filename.

Was making a new campaign and went to make a drink - came back and it crashed - well locked up - non-responsive. Was editing a weapon effect on a PC. Lots of extensions, but I also had the same thing happen yesterday with a zero extension campaign.

Yeah they are they lastest version of Nvidia drivers.

EDIT: There appears to be another version but its not reached my repo yet. I am on 460.32 and the newer ones are 460.39

What I mean is, did they update recently? I know FGU has been working for you for quite a while so I'm wondering if something changed. The dump in the logs shows the same issue a couple of other users have been having.

Oh yeah updated a few weeks ago to 460 from 455. Nvidia are slow with their Linux drivers.

Happened twice in a row now on the no-extensions map making campaign (maybe Author is installed) - selected a folder layer with about 12 assets inside and it froze. Happened twice in a row moving the same assets, which I said at the beginning of this sentence but its 1am.
43478

EDIT: Workaround was to move only 10 assets at a time - actually seems more like 22 assets in the original move - and type /save after each successful alteration.

CPU is at 6% Memory usage at 2.5GB - gonna leave it for a bit see if it un-hangs. Its not crashed or shut down yet.

Infinity hang loop detected. OK so now I have tried moving 8 assets in a folder together - that worked. Some of them have LOS attached btw. They moved fine. But when I dragged the box to shrink them a little - hang time!

Just for testing purposes, I flipped over to windows and tried the same thing - and it crashed there too. Exactly same procedure - resizing and moving a folder with 8 assets inside it.

Thanks for checking that out on Windows too. I've assigned a bug for Carl to look at the last few posts.

Unfortunately, the logs don't have any information, which means it must be some sort of infinite loop or something. Do you have a sample campaign with included assets and specific steps that recreates the issue? That would help immensely.

It started with a random freeze while I was away from the keyboard. Recently I have been spending time making maps in FGU. I have a bunch of graphic assets in folders and I was moving dragging those assets around on the map to reposition and resize. In the last 3 post it was the same same "Furniture Blockade" asset folder I was moving - either I moved them a little way, or moved and then tried resizing and FGU just locks up - the mouse still works but you can't do anything.

I can upload my campaign and assets folders to a drop box or something - it will be pretty asset heavy but I can try to find the specific groupings only and not give you the whole folder. Once its uploaded I will send a link via the support portal.

Carl - I notice that if I am using a modifier key like Shift when resizing that it freezes. Maybe its something to do with that.

Scrap that - I made a video. https://lbry.tv/@Jiminimonka:4/FGU-Asset-Bug:3

I removed the LOS from those Furniture assets and they move around "solo" ok - and grouped together was OK as well, so possibly LOS is the culprit - I do have LOS turned off so its not active while I am editing.

Summary: Server Crash
Ruleset(s): 5e
New Campaign: IWD-RotF
Extensions/Themes: Official Language Extension (FR)
Modules Loaded: The core 5e modules, PHB, MM, DMG, as well IWD-RotF
Operating System / Language Setting: Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS (Focal Fossa) / Win10
Steps to Reproduce: None that I know of. Seems to occur mostly in 3rd hour.

Lesson Learned:
Save logs before restarting server. Maybe next time.

Background:
I have about 1 server crash during 3 hour game sessions. First happened under Linux. Switched to Windows 10 for next game session. Not only server crash but Windows BSOD. Back to Linux. Two more game sessions, two more CTD.

This weeks game session:
Players were on Gem Mine level 2. I started dragging icons from combat tracker to Gem Mine level 3. Some players started to comment that they could only see black. Could see icons but nothing else. I turned off LOS which fixed that issue. They could see whole map. 30 seconds to 1 minute later server crashed. When server restarted, game state was prior to when I turned off LOS. Will try to remember to get logs next time.

If you compile logs at the relaunch it will have the logs from the previous crashed session.

Yes, we will need the logs and/or steps to reproduce. Hard crashes usually show up in the logs; whereas endless loops and other feature-use errors may require exact steps.

The logs for the previous session are saved; so hitting Compile Logs right after re-launching FGU will save off a copy.

OK - I have for the past 6 hours or so been editing this map with LOS removed from the assets and not had a single "situation". Including moving groups of assets around and resizing them.

Here is something I noticed a few times - not sure if its Linux or FGU in general. I made a map in FGU (the one I sent via support) - when I then open that map inside a campaign, its fine, loads up perfect etc.

43538 Before

When I quit and come back to the campaign (having only put the characters tokens on the map from the CT).

43539

The layers are in the wrong order - the floor is meant to be under the walls, but is above them - also some other assets are in the wrong place too. If I Revert changes on the map it fixes it, but I then have to replace the player tokens and they have lost their fog of war info.

I'll test it in Windows 10 now.

Jiminimonka
February 7th, 2021, 18:05

Yeah - same in windows - layers are in the wrong order. Revert changes fixes it.

You should have the image files from the last zip I uploaded. I'll send the campaign and let me know if you need the image folders again.

SUPPORT-9647 is the ticket.

Edited the map (which you now have) with numbers so I can sort out the layers quicker without having to Revert Changes, 1 being top layer and I put the LOS in the 50s at the bottom.

Just opened up the campaign for players to join.

43550

You can see they are in seemingly random orders - nothing inside folders was numbered.

Correct order 43551

Just went back in after re-ordering the list - the list is in the same wrong order but not the image is fine.

EDIT: Amost perfect image, slightly out but not as bad as previously. Shall I also upload the .mod file?

Playing Rime of the Frostmaiden last night, had some crash issues. It seemed to happen when a generic battlemap the DM had was shared. Not sure if the map file was too big, or just a coincidence. DM also had more than a few extensions loaded.

Log attached.

Hope this helps!

Glad you got it solved. Do note that last I knew there is an issue that when you end up with lots and lots (hundreds) of DLC, the update button will always be red. Something about a timeout.
