Weapon Type and Combat Tracker questions

BRP has an optional rule that lets you incorporate an initiative roll, the BRP combat tracker seems to hard lock the order based on DEX. What might be a way to get around that to allow for initiative rolls? Was thinking I create NPC stand ins for the PC and change the DEX score on the fly to incorporate the roll but was wondering if there might be a better way. Thanks.
