What does it mean when a character in the top left had corner has zzz's on its portrait?

I assumed it was that the connection was lost but they could still move their character

It has to do with whether a player is active or not - such as chatting etc. It is currently bugged I think in Unity in that it isn't being removed when it should. So it can basically be ignored.
