View Full Version : FGU - Managing Allies

So, I'm trying to figure out how to give my players control of their allies. I tried dragging them from the NPC menu and dropping them on the Ally section, then dragging them to the combat tracker, but that doesn't work. I've also tried removing the PC from the Combat Tracker and re-adding them to it in hopes that the allies would drag along with it, but that didn't work either. I've also looked at the wiki and was unable to find an answer there as well.
If someone could shed some light on this, or point me in the right direction so I can figure it out on my own, that would be much appreciated :)

I made some tests and I can make Allies rolls but I can't move the token on map. Is the same for you, :{ BK }:?

That is exactly what's happening... I did find this thread though, so I'm going to give this a try at my next session.

I know FGU is still in Beta, and hopefully that doesn't go on for very much longer, but it would be nice if the Wiki actually had this information and I didn't have to go digging through a forum, or even make this post, to find my answer. I should've been able to go the Savage Worlds rules set and find information on how to utilize this core mechanic within the context of FGU. I've been using FG for 6+ years and their wiki has always been lacking... It is truly frustrating sometimes.

Thanks so much for sharing your findings. So “LOS Party visión and movement” option must be activated.

I was running up against this the other night. I really don't like this solution. I wish these were two separate options. I may want to give players control of an NPC, but not let them see the map from other players vantage points.

Make the NPC a PC and let one of the players Own the NPC/PC by claiming it in the Character Selection.

So I've tried this following the directions very carefully, and my players can move the NPCs, open the sheet, roll traits and even see LOS and Fog of War (Options set to share party vision).
HOWEVER, they are unable to interact with the combat tab. Double-clicking attacks or damage does nothing. Not able to drag dice onto creatures, desktop or chat. Again, I've followed the directions provided:
* Drag NPC to combat tracker
* Drag NPC link from tracker to PC portrait at top. Sheet opens for PC and NPC now shows up in PC's Allies list.
* Drag NPC token to map
* PC is able to move NPC around and open the sheet by double-clicking the token. Can use traits on Traits tab without issue.
* Can't make attacks or do anything on the Combat tab

I'll take this functioning over fancy lighting and LOS stuff, just saying :)

If you want players to control allies combat-wise, you must either add them as Allies into PC sheet and add them to CT from there OR more ad-hoc approach is move Ally CT entry into PC group. That allows the PC to roll from their sheet.

Is there a way to have a summoned ally in the combat tracker under a character so they don't get dealt their own card?

If the ally is under the character (in the Allies list on the Main tab) as Ikael suggests, it's easy. In the Combat Tracker click Menu, "Add to Tracker", "Add Allies". All allies under all characters in CT will have their respective allies added.
If the ally is not attached to the character, and is not in CT, drag the NPC's button (the one which opens the character sheet) and drop it on the character in CT on the group button. It's just to the right of the character name. With the default theme, it's red and looks like 3 meeples.
If the ally is already in CT, drag the character button (the one that open the character sheet in CT) and drop it on the controlling character's group button.
You can drag controlled character out from under another character and drop it on the CT to undo this.
I do this to reorganize encounters. The encounter lists NPCs in like groups and adds them to CT like that. I separate out hirelings, then move a few mooks under each hireling. So I can have 3 groups of 1 sergeant and 3 soldiers each. It would be cool if Encounters let you group them ahead of time like that.
You can do the same with PCs, btw. This is what we do with wild card animal companions. I figured out to put those on their own PC character sheet rather than an NPC sheet. Just an aside, but this confused me early on learning FGU, trying to figure out how wild cards like companions and sidekicks work in FGU.

Thank you Mike. That was very helpful. I wish there was an up to date wiki or documentation to help a new GM figure all of this out. Maybe there is but I just don't know where to find it. Maybe that is my own ineptitude or maybe it should be made more obvious. I've spent days watching videos, many of which are out of date, and combing the forums but still feel like I barely have an idea how to run a game.

There aren't enough Savage Worlds videos. Wikis are never up to date, anywhere. I think that's a wiki rule.
I don't know how good an example I am, but maybe you could watch me through discord some Thursday evening while I run game. Or I could give you a quick live tour.
