I was trying to replace a map with an updated version, while retaining the masked image on top of it that I had spent hours on creating. Unfortunately, I foolishly didn't follow the steps I've used when doing this before - that is, rename the new image to match the old, and then copy it into the images folder, overwriting the old image there. Instead, I copied the new image into the images folder, deleted the old image there, and then renamed the new image. Now, when I deleted the old image in the images folder, it appears that the masked image associated with it disappeared from the masked images folder. My question is: where did it go? Is there any way to recover it? (I know its name, from a backup db.xml file.)

I fear not. But some of the wiser heads might have a solution

It's a stand alone file that is related to the image. if you delete the image then the mask file gets deleted as well.

You could try a delete file recovery application and then work out the file name you'll have to give it for the new map.
