View Full Version : Massive De-Sync Issues since last Update

Hello everyone,
the last Update did indeed improve loading of lists a lot - it's nearly instant, but the side effect on our session yesterday was that players regularily de-synced. They rolled the dice, but noone could see them, they moved their character, but only they could see them moving. We never had this before the patch. All players were affected, just at different times. Sometimes several at once, sometimes only one. Relogging fixed it, for some minutes, then it started again at some person.

It was nearly unplayable. Is that a known issue?

Have you disabled any extensions? And are all the players updated to the same version?

We don't use any extensions and all players used the updated version. Vanilla 5E with Tomb of Annihilation.

That sounds like a connection issue. We've heard anecdotally that some extensions, and some modules have caused network traffic overload.

* Do you have any modules open other than Tomb of Annihilation on the GM side?
* Can you check to see if you have any flood protection or QoS settings on your router or on your security software? (Just a guess that maybe something is cutting off connection outside FG)

Yes, all i bought but any adventures. This hasn't been an issue in the past 8 month neither with FGC or FGU, though.
//EDIT: See attachment.

I'm not using any security software besides Windows Defender. My Router has no such settings.

There have been some people that have reported issues when loading large amounts of content; so I would suggest turning off any content you are not immediately using for your game. (i.e. preferably anything but the adventure module)

We just pushed a new build today with some adjustments to the networking engine to mostly help with stalls; but I would like to get the logs for immediately when this happens for both the GM and player. Also, I would like to get a copy of your campaign folder. This post has more detail on what I need.

Hello Moon,
i sent you the Campaign folder via e-mail.

Does FG create logs automatically, e.g. is there some logs folder that has the logs from Sunday?
If not, you might want to introduce that.

Nearly all of these books include content used by chars and if i unload those, i can no longer click on the info buttons for features / abilities / etc, which is the reason i keep them active. For sure there is a few i can unload, but rulebooks and the modules that are being used by characters are important to us,
as i'm still quite new and have to read up stuff every now and then.

Are you referring to the links already applied to a PC sheet? If so, these are copies of the data from the module, so can be opened without the original module being open as the data has been copied to the PC sheet itself. There are some links - race, background and class, for example, that are actual links to the original module, but the rest should be local data.

Yep, i'm seeing that with pretty much everything, though. Which is also why i myself have both GM and Players books loaded, as it often tells me that its not available, as its part of "XYZ Players" module.

Links on a character sheet or somewhere else? Can you give some examples (with screenshots if possible)?

Thank you for the campaign files. I took a detailed look at the campaign; and I'm not seeing anything that really stands out as an issue. (No extensions loaded, no abnormally large data files/records, no extremely large image files, ...)

So, I'm not sure why you would be having any sort of mid-session disconnect issues. If it happens again, can you immediately grab the full logs for both GM and disconnected player? (Type /console in chat entry; then click Compile Logs) I'm hoping the logs will point out something happening. Otherwise, I'll need to see if I can connect to you and recreate; or figure out how to turn on enough logging to capture without slowing down everything else too much.

With the recent network library update on 7/14, I'm hoping that helps as well; but it was mainly to address the connection stall (and a few other connection-type issues). This may be related, but hard to tell without logs.

I got logs for todays session, player Mikrena got desycned pretty much every 15 minutes. (Roughly, not regularily timed)
GM1 Time = Player1 Time (If it worked correctly)
Didn't get a log for Player 4 myself.

* What happened when Mikrena lost connection? (Just stopped updating but otherwise didn't report connection loss? Reported lost connection and returned to launch screen (with some Lua errors)?

* Where are you located physically (city/country)? Where is Mikrena located physically (city/country)?

Thanks,

Hello Moon Wizard,

Nothing. We just notice it when he asks if someone else moved or i notice it when i want him to roll a dice or move his character, but nothing happens despite he says he is doing it. No errors, no opened console, no lua errors, no return to launch screen. Hence i call it "desync".
He needs to leave the game, i need to kick him from the game (as he is not leaved for me), then he can reconnect and it works for another twenty minutes at best.

* Where are you located physically (city/country)? Where is Mikrena located physically (city/country)?
Me: Near Augsburg, Germany
Him: Near Stuttgart, Germany

(~ 165 kilometres)

Thank you for the additional information confirming what I thought you meant by de-sync; as well as the location information.

You're welcome. Tomorrow is another session, i hope this issue can be resolved soon. It's not very fun for the affected player(s).

Anything new about this? Issue persisted for the player two weeks ago and tomorrow is our next session.

Partially. The network cloud library developer updated the servers to prevent some people hammering the servers with invalid requests that should help some; and he has another update coming soon (supposed to be this week) that will set up the servers to automatically attempt relay reconnect if relay connection lost (which is the end result of the issues mostly seen to date). I may need a new client library once he has that in place, but I won't know for sure until he gets it released.

We also had a new developer join us this week to pick up the Linux, installer, and updater pieces who has some good networking experience. After he gets those caught up, if we're still having issues, we'll probably look at writing our own network facilitation system.
