View Full Version : Non D&D Starter sets?

Normally, I run a 5e game on the weekend, but sometimes one or more of the players can't make it. So, instead of not playing anything that week, I thought it would be fun to try out other systems, and members of the group are interested too. But, I am having trouble finding any of the starter sets on FG. Does anyone know of a non D&D one? I looked through the Starfinder and Call of Cthulhu stuff in the FG store and didn't notice them, but could be over looking it. I was hoping to find something with the basic rules, pregens and a short adventure to run all in one (usually not too expensive) package. I know they have them available in hard copy/pdf, but using FGU is the best option due to distance of the group members and the whole pandemic...

Don't know about any starter sets, but did see the Starfinder bundle which appears to include everything needed to get started on that platform.

Hope this helps!

The starter sets haven't been converted for CoC or Starfinder. They're usually difficult to convert as they use cut-down versions of the rules and so can need changing of code of the ruleset they run on top of - which might not be an insignificant change, or the develoers haven't got round to doing it.

If you're interested in Starfinder, the core rules are currently on sale: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/store/product.php?id=PZOSMWPZO7101FG If you own the PDF at Paizo you'll get the cost off your purchase (sync your accounts here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/store/syncPaizoAccount.xcp) if you don't own the PDF, you'll get it as part of your purchase (see the link above).

Then you could get a couple of the Starfinder Scoiety scenarios: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/store/?search=starfinder+society+scenario and use some of the Starfinder Society pregens from here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?42919-Starfinder-Files-Pregen-Player-Characters-(Official-SFRPG-FG-format)

In theory you could run game with just the scenario and the pregens, if you own a copy of the rules already, as the SFRPG ruleset come with your license. But you'll probably find it handy to have all the reference material in the Core Rules product.

Likewise, for Call of Cthulhu, the ruleset is on sale: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/store/product.php?id=CHAFGCOCCOC7ERS which comes with 2 scenarios. You can download some pregens from here: https://www.chaosium.com/gm-resources/ They don't take long to enter into FG.

You could download the Quickstart for free: https://www.chaosium.com/cthulhu-quickstart/ and the scenario is converted to FG and available for less than $1 here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/store/product.php?id=CHACOC7EFGTH

If you're not familiar with Starfinder already, I'd say Call of Cthulhu would be better to get going quicker - for $22 you could get the ruleset (with the keepers manual and two scenarios) and the scenario from the Quickstart rules - then run using the quickstart rules, and enter some pregens for the players (decide up front which ones they'll play to minimize your data entry).

Give it a try, its a real cool and fún system.

Thanks for the detailed reply, Trenloe! I will most likely take your suggestion with Call of Cthulhu. The group seems interested in it and a short intro adventure is ideal.

Thanks for your reply too TXCBoy36, but the bundle is a lot outside of what I want to spend at the moment;)

Edit to add:
Thanks to Wizards Ghost too! It took me awhile to finish my reply and I just noticed you responded too. DCC does look interesting, but we are playing a fantasy game already, so was looking for a different genre. I have a ton of old RPGs from my youth, just nothing easy to play remotely.

Call of Cthulhu can be hard for D&D layers to adjust to.
Their characters are no longer dragon slaying heroes capable of great feats but ordinary people thrust into a situation they themselves struggle to understand or believe!
Ia! Ia!
Have fun.
