Overview
Theater of the Mind Extension will be made available first as an extension for testing and feedback from the community. This will provide a new button in the top of the sidebar to open a frame to hold theater of the mind scenes. This can be combat, social interactions, chase, or whatever kind of scenes you can come up with to help run theater of the mind.
Features
Currently only one orientation is available and that is the East West setup. It will contain two columns, but when the frame is resized it will add or remove row slots (for those big scenes). The scene (image) can be changed on the fly, by drag n' dropping an image link on the frame. Friend or Foe icons can be dragged to the frame from the combat tracker to quickly add combatants to the slots. Combat actions, conditions, targeting, and visibility are available as well. Consider this frame as you would any other type of map when in a combat situation.
Installing
Download the file located in this post and navigate to the root directory of your Fantasy Grounds. This can be quickly navigated by clicking on the folder icon in FGC and FGU dashboard. Then place the file in your extensions folder and it will be available in the extensions selection prior to you starting your session.
Disclaimer
As with any test project, please back up your campaign prior to using the extension. Testing can cause issues that are unforeseen and may damage your data. Best to start a new campaign first to ensure your campaign doesn't get lost.

Very nice indeed.
For those of you trying this out - a couple of things.
Don't drop images on a square. Also when dragging NPCs from the CT use the link button rather than the token as you would on a normal map.

- Add a "Hide/Share" toggle. This would be useful for when a DM wants to set up a scene with a new image, drag NPCs on, and then "reveal" it all at once.
- This might be total pie-in-the-sky wishing ... but if there was a way to label the columns, so you could label the middle ones "Melee" and outer columns "Ranged" or something else for other rulesets, etc. I can see this being highly useful for the upcoming Star Trek Adventures ruleset with it's unique Contact/Close/Medium/Long/Extreme ranges (especially for space combat). Obviously, this can PROBABLY be accomplished with some simple text tokens. But still, if possible, it would be cooler if you could actually have editable column labels.
- When you have an image in the window and you drag a new image in ... it would be nice if the system automatically unshared the old image.
Just the ones I've thought of right away.

@Tyrannosaurus Vex I agree with what you posted and is on the list to expand from this to include your suggestions. They were certainly on my wishlist for this project as I am a huge theater of the mind kind of DM. It's the next step for this. Call this the foundation from where we will be expanding upon. Also, this will be universal to all CoreRPG based rulesets. I want to make this as generic as possible to allow any kind of scene and not just combat. Thanks for the feedback and will be taking notes for the next update to this. Keep them coming.

That is because you do not have any background image attached; when you resize it then it tries to load an image for the background and a blank one gets added :) (@superteddy, I hope I remembered your explanation correctly ;) )

The frame will not include an image at first. It will require dragging an image link to the frame. As Zacc mentioned, don't drop it on a slot as it will accept it. I'm looking into limiting the drops to slots. Resizing the frame will only add rows at this time. The number of columns is currently static.

I'm not sure how that would operate as I didn't test with that functionality. If the top buttons on the sidebar are in a certain button, I would check there. I will try and get with Celestian and see what might be the issue.

A frame to run theater of the mind type play. Helps keep track of PCs and NPCs in the encounter and ensure there is a visible representation of where they are at without a tactical battlemap.

So, here's a glitch: downloaded the ext, moved to Extensions folder in the root folder structure. Updated the app (just in case) and started a new campaign (tried in CoreRPG and 5e). Couldn't see the extension anywhere in the module activation dialog box. I assume that's where I would see it.
So not sure how to activate it....

You need to activate it before you start the campaign :) There is some extension list when you click on your campaign before you start it :) (where you also select your themes etc.)

This does not work in Conan 2d20 and More Core rulesets. When I dragg from CT nothing happens. Aside from that it is awesome one... but can't implement for my players yet.

If I drag PC from Combat Tracker to the Panel it does not work, when I drag from Characters screen it works. Now this is fine for the PC, but I can't drag and drop NPC from CT but from NPC Library, which is not linked to CT and I have double work to do to add/remove combatants. Is this the process?

The token does not work at this time, but if you click and drag the link in the CT to the slot it will load the NPC. Also, the friend or foe icons will add all the relevant actors as well to the slots if you drop it on the frame.

I have no issues working in the code :)
I can recommend to expose column numbers as Game Options, like the decals. This will be the best.

Wait a minute! How did you add pictures to your sidebar buttons?
Also, and actually more importantly, how do I share the TotM with my players?
Do they need to install the extension also?
Is it automatically added to theirs as with the CT?
I'm planning on using this for Social Interaction more than TotM combat, but it has a fun JRPG format that lends itself to yelling something incomprehensible in broken anime Japanese while throwing a fireball at the front row.

The rulesets pictures are Conan and MoreCore respectively. Those are the base themes in those rulesets. Once you download the .ext file, you will need to place it in your extensions folder for the program. You can reach this quickly by hitting the folder icons on dashboard of the program. Then choose your campaign and navigate through the extensions list and select the extension to have it available within your campaign.

I tested this out on FGU tonight. The main problems were, 1. Players could only see their own token and NPC tokens, but not the other PC tokens; and 2. All effects were revealed to the players, including effects which were set to GM-only view in the CT. I very much like the idea behind this and hope to use it again when it has gone through some more revisions.

Updated first post with new build. May need verification on multiple user connections, but with a single player was able to view other PC characters on the frame with updated code. Also added hiding GM only effects.

Is there a way to get back to the default background back? I right clicked and chose Close Window but all it did was make the (wooden) background disappear. Now I can't get it back. Can't find a way to reset back to the defaults.

After I used Close Window and the background disappeared, I was able to get the background back, briefly, when I exited to the launcher and reloaded my campaign. (I had to do that because my campaign disconnected from the matchmaking server.)
However, when I re-sized the TOTM window, I lost the background again.
I also had problems dragging and dropping characters and NPCs from the Combat Tracker to the TOTM window.

You will need to use either the friend/foe icons in the Combat tracker or drag the links. Won't work with tokens currently.

Help. I got this TOTM extension working on my DM side. " add the image by dragging an image link to the window. " did all the right things. But there is no way to "Share" this battlemapTOTM with players. I right click and there is no sharing option. So I went to my 2nd FGU instance and clicked the "TOTM" icon top right corner. All it did was open the default empty TOTM template. No image under it. I did share the actual image and the player can see that. But there is no TOTM grid on top of it.
Do the players have to add the shared graphics to the TOTM template themselves?
Weird, I had the player side open the image again and now the TOTM template is overlayed on it. Working now. I guess things have to be open closed in a certain way. Share the actual image BEFORE adding the TOTM template.

I was not able to replicate this issue with a host and test client. When the image is dropped onto the frame from the host, it shares the image that is in the frame. As for sharing the frame itself. Players can open the frame using the button as if they were accessing the combat tracker. When providing feedback, please provide more information.

Im getting alot of problems here. I tried moving my character from the left side to the right side next to the Gnolls. Same errors appear. When ever I drag my character from the Combat Tracker to the Map or from one spot on the Map to another. I get that "Draginfo" error I paste above.
Also, every time I have any Gnoll attack my character, I get the following error:
Is there a reason why my character shows [DEF EFFECTS -10]
I just talked to the Castles * Crusades people and shared my screen. They determined that the DEF EFFECT message is caused by "Effects" are not always working from CT to Chat window. But sometimes works when you drag to tokens on the map. THey gonna rework the code of all the effects. But im still getting that "draginfo" defbug message. They told me I should talk to you about that.

The image issue appears to be how the code is interacting with FGU. They are making quite a bit of changes to maps and such and technically that is what the image is when you drop it onto the frame. I will add that to the list of things to update for FGU. As for the draginfo portion, that is not a error. I accidentally left a Debug script in the code. It just relays information for me when I was testing out the code. I will get that removed on the next update. The [DEF EFFECTS -10] doesn't show on the image you presented and might be more ruleset side of things as you mentioned. I will provide a hotfix for the Debug code, but the image related issue will take a bit longer.

Thank you for the update on the Debug Script. Ive been fighting TOTM extension all morning. It just is not working right. Here are some screenshots below.
1. I cant see the image in the DM side. weird. The player side can see it
2. Check Line of Site icon. On and off
3. Made sure each image is Shared
4. Player side can see shared imaged.
5. Player side cannot see the image within the TOTM window. Only the template.
6. Tried the image from the Campaign and the Module. Both same result.

I'm not sure what might be causing the issues you are seeing. I have tested it with a fresh campaign in Castles and Crusades and I am only seeing the scaling issue that was reported earlier. I have stated that I will have to work through the extension to make it work better with FGU and will take some time to work through that. LOS and the map functions shouldn't be used on the image in question and might be the cause of your issues. So, this may take some time to sort through and get it working with FGU.

Thank you for looking into this issue. Until then, I guess I will use the default image this extension provided. It looks nice. But I cant find it anywhere. How do you return to the default image?
Update: I had the player log out of the session and back in again. It worked! The TOTM image now has the background and they can see instantly when ever I change the background.

FGC bug (Savage Worlds): if I try to resize the theater of the mind window, this bug goes ballistic with many many many copies of it:

Ok I downloaded the new extension and saved it to my Extension folder. Started a new game. It works with the added functionality of adding additional rows. But I am unable to resize the window. How do you resize the actual TOTM window?
ok nvm, you cant see the mouse cursor change shape. But I can resize the window if I click on the exact right spots on the border.

It would be great if it were possible to add text fields. In addition to the more general use for specifying distances (meele, ranged, etc.), it would be useful to make relevant notes about the scene in play (would help a lot in games on Cortex Prime)

That may be so, but I'm trying this for the first time and dropping a background image into the Totm window, not on an icon frame, changes the background to grey with no picture. I'm fine with that as it doesn't affect the function of the ext. which I like, but it's still not working as described.
I am using a fresh download the ext from post #1. I am using the Castles & Crusades ruleset.
I also am using other exts: Clock Adjuster, Ready Check, Player Agency, Window Saver X
I also noticed that even with a fresh install of the ext, it remembered Character icons and their position on the grid. (for what it's worth)

Hello, this is Jan 23 and tried to use the TOTM map. But no image will display. It worked last Sunday. So just now, I re-downloaded the ext from this thread and installed it again. It is still not working. No matter which image I try to use.

I tested the latest version, but I'm not seeing the errors you have reported. Can you open a fresh campaign with only the theater of the mind extension loaded and see if it produces the same errors?

superteddy57 I uploaded a screenshot of a new campaign I created. I added each of these extensions 1 by 1 and tested. They all work with TOTM. What is not in the screenshot is an extension called "Shops - Castles & Crusades" version. Since the regular Shops that I paid for on DMSguild does not work with C&C ruleset.
The TOTM ext broke in my primary campaign after I replaced the TOTM ext with your latest version. How do i get it fixed in my existing campaign? The new campaign I tested with does not have any of the extra objects, artwork, maps and Effects I have created in that campaign. I created this new campaign and it has nothing in it. But I did save my module with an extention that created reference modules and I did LOAD that. But still missing anything I created in the campaign after I created that module from scratch.
Further testing. I tried disabling the ext. Then save, then reload campaign, then save, then enabled ext again, then load. Still doesnt work in existing campaign. But does work in new campaign with all the other extension.

Hi,
Installed this today - SWADE with the Lankhmar setting and no extensions loaded.
Errors popping up on dragging items to the TotM window, dropping in a background, etc.

Got a new error this time:

No error if you drag from the Character Selection, but if you drag from the CT then error.
EDIT: Scrap that - errors either way.

Thanks for the report. I was in the middle of adding the functionality for tokens to be dropped and forgot to take it out. Currently only links and friendorfoe drops are supported. I can upload a new version with that axed out so an error doesn't appear and just returns or you can just not drop tokens till I can get a working version for that.

Just decided to fix it cause it made it easier to fix with the new ActorManager changes. You might see some hiccups with the token going to a letter. If you move the token around a bit it will revert back to the proper token. I'll hunt that down with my list, just have a few other projects that need my attention today.

In the Vampire the Masquerade ruleset, there is a "delay" when I put a new image into the background. The first image change does not register for players, but it does for the storyteller. So whenever you change the image the players are one image behind so to speak.
Portraits also all over the place. I am bereft of the ability to explain what is going on there. Sorry. Bad feedback, but... yeah...

Is this in FGU/FGC?
How are you adding images? With the link from the masterindex or from assets?
When placing tokens on the slots, are you dragging the token from the CT, or from the sheet?

This is FGU.
I drag from the masterindex (I guess), cause I am not dragging images from assets. Initially I didn't understand that I needed to drag from the combat tracker, but that solves the "players can't see the tokens issue I had. But I've seen npc's that has a unique portrait, just get a random letter token or even the portrait of a player character. How that happens is beyond me to explain.
Then again, I am at a loss to explain half the bugs in that ruleset.

When I drag an NPC that is not ID'd to the window on the right side, it shows its name (it should show the 'unidentified creature' label instead).

I ran across this TotM extension and I'm super excited to use it for encounters that I don't need a tactical battle map for, but i'm having an issue with the TotM, and it's probably something I'm just not understanding properly. I'm okay with FGU, but I'm not a super user.
So when I've got the extension open. I've got it broken into 5 columns, melee, short/medium/long/out of combat. The issue is when i drag a pc from the combat tracker their token doesn't show up unless i move them to a different column and then drag them back, otherwise the token just shows as a the first letter of the character's name. It's not a huge issue as I can get the character token image to show up by moving it.
The bigger issue is when I'm trying to add npcs to the TotM. If I have 8 orcs that all have the same image i can't get them to be separate if that makes sense. So if i drag orc 1 to the TotM, and then drag orc 2 it is using orc 1's image, that's much more annoying. What am I doing wrong?

Looks like the latest update has given TotM extension some headaches :( Gives invalid parameter errors when you try to resize the columns and a bunch of windowclass warning messages.

I'm going to go hide with Egg on my face, Teddy, I've loaded up a test campaign with no other extensions and there's no errors. So I obviously have an extension conflict that might be causing it, I'll look into it and apologize for taking up your time (love this extension, though!).

No worries! Just for the future, please provide the console logs or the errors you are receiving. It helps track down the cause.

Hey! So I was trying to use this with Damned's in process SotDL ruleset and I only have a couple extensions loaded. Celestian's audio, basic card deck extension and whenever I click on the token in the totm map it give me the attached error message? I think it still works but it always gives me this message. Thanks in advance!

Question. How does the totm window handle images? I'm resizing the window and the landscape image I have won't fill up the window so there are gray spaces above and below. Can I import a larger image? (tried that and didn't seem to work). Would love to have the entire image filled. Apologies if this was asked elsewhere. Thanks!

The extension was built with FGC in mind and uses that old logic to building the pieces. I haven't had a chance to update the core code for FGU. There are some great new tools in FGU that would help stretch the image across the whole of the background. Just currently not high on my priority list. Something is releasing soon.

The button in the "Tools" in FGu is unfortunately the default button, and I get several identical buttons. See the bottom row here - it keeps me guessing which is the correct button.

That is a generic button when one is not assigned. At the moment a unique button would be something to consider, but will be some time till I have one available.

Apologies, I must have not been notified you asked another question. May be a bit late, but the CT (combat tracker) will function as it always did. The extension just provides a space for quick combat and function more akin to a slotted map than a tracker.

Thanks for both or your reports. I am currently separating the code to a FGC stable build that will not be updated moving forward. I will be putting up a FGU only build that will continue getting updates. This will take me some time to complete.

It appears to be a "catastrophic" error. Completely removing the button and window.

Yeah, I don't think I saw the button either. I will probably disable it until an update, not a problem.
In that particular campaign, I actually haven't' been able to use it successfully. I think it still might have the problem I had long ago (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?59220-Theater-of-the-Mind-(Universal)-Extension&p=543721&viewfull=1#post543721).

Is this dead? I started to use it with my group for about a month before the error popped up back in July. We only used it a handful of times but really liked it. Any chance this will see a fix to work with the current FGU?

I'm not sure if anyone else is experiencing this, but on a 5e campaign with only the TotM extension active, I get the following error thrown whenever I pull a token from the combat tracker and drop on an image (it does not happen if I drop it on the TotM window):
[ERROR] Script execution error: [string "CoreRPG:campaign/scripts/image.lua"]:23: attempt to call field 'onImageDrop' (a nil value)

Really loved this extension. Any chance it can get fixed to work with the new updates? Left columns have been all elongated and overlapping for quite a while now. Unusable in the current state. Would be very glad to see it working again.
