Hello,

Probably a silly question: How do I check where the token placements are on a map for a given encounter? I don't want to drag the encounter to the combat tracker just to do a quick pre-game check

Drag it into the CT is the only way once the encounter has been closed after initial placement.

OK, thank you. I'm sure I'll get used to it.

If you don't want to mess with a combat tracker that's already populated, then you could create an empty campaign for the same module and look at it there. Not handy though.

When I want to check the encounter placement I populate the combat tracker in the campaign I'm making the adventure in not a live campaign with players. FYI in case you don't know best practices is to make adventures and their encounters in a campaign and export that to be used in a campaign that has PCs.
