Not sure if this is a FGU issue, a 5e issue, or neither.

Player gets this:
https://imgur.com/aBWSsvK.jpg

Player can press "Unload" to toggle it to "Load" and vice versa. Book never opens.

Other modules load with no issue for player.

All modules load fine for my test player (local network, not localhost).

Player's log:

Player cannot load backgrounds or anything from PHB.
Additionally, cannot access PHB in "Library" windows where other modules are loaded.

It's taking it's time to download all the data from the GM. This may be that the connection gets blocked for some reason on the GM side. We've seen this with some routers having flood control on them that restricts connections when a lot of data is uploaded to one destination.

As a test, try a brand new 5e campaign, with no extensions at all (no languages, not themes, nothing), to minimize the amount of data uploaded from the GM to the player. Then allow only the PHB for access to the player - make sure that is the only module that has a green check/tick in the GM's module activation window. Then get the player to join and have then open the PHB module (it should be the only one they can access). See if this opens.

Seeing this, I told him, "Just wait and leave it open for a bit and see what happens." In the meantime, we had extra time to discuss his character, I got a better feel for what he was wanting, and was about to go build it for him when we discovered the PHB had completed loading on his end while we were conversing. All items from the PHB were available (backgrounds, races, etc.) and it was viewable in the "Library" lower left frame for him.

I did not perform the extra test, because he describes his current laptop as a "tin can," so I didn't want to push anything. ;)

Tonight, as a player, I seemed to have an issue with two modules: Volos guide to Monster’s Player and SCAG-Player.

Basic Rules, PHB, and DMG-Players seemed to load fine.

After clicking the load button, the modules would appear to load but never complete. I noticed a temporary file being created in my SmiteWorks/Fantasy Grounds/Cache/<campagne_name>/modules/ directory and then being removed over and over again.

The file sizes of the existing files (which I expected to be updated as the temp file was created and data appended) never increased.

I then noticed that my network monitoring software was showing a lot of data transfer from the DM’s IP address.

I turned network capture on and the captured stream seems to be the content of these two modules sent over and over again. 1.34 GB worth of data was transferred before I restarted FGU. During this transfer my computer fans kicked up.

After restarting and choosing NOT to load these two modules FGU worked fine and the fans seemed to be quieter.

I've included my Wireshark Summary for the time I let it run.

You shoudl delete the campaign cache for the campaign on that player computer and reconnect.

The above was documented a few minutes after I deleted the cache and noticed the problem was still ongoing despite the cache purge.

Can you provide a copy of your campaign? And the name of the user affected? And the name of the module affected?

Thanks,

Here is a link to the cache file. (It's all I have access to) The character was Felix Furo. I also have the 1.34 GB packet capture stream from wire shark where the modules continued to load over and over again. I can provide that as well. Just let me know how you want it delivered.

Volo's guide to monsters - player and Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide - player were the two modules affected. The other modules appeared to load fine.

Can you share the packet capture? Is it in a format that can be read outside wire shark? I might be able to see what messages were sent in the data that might have triggered some sort of cycle.

It’s just a text file. Wire shark is free and can parse it and reconstruct the files. I’ll get a link to it this evening.

Thanks for the file. It is huge, so a little hard to navigate with editors. I can verify that it's requesting the module data files many times over for some reason. This is odd, since it performs a hash check of the local file vs. the reported hash check of the module file from the host. Once it receives the file, it should match.

I'll look at adding some more checks, so that it can only ever request once per session.

Also, can you give me an idea of the two machines (GM and player) that had this issue? (Windows vs. Mac, OS version, etc.)

Thanks,
JPG

I was on a Mac running Mojave.
System Version: macOS 10.14.6 (18G103)
Kernel Version: Darwin 18.7.0

I believe the DM was running Windows.

I booted into windows(Same mac hardware) for last night's game. No issues. Also a problem i had with tokens appearing as question-marked boxes also disappeared.
