View Full Version : Forge Dwarf's Fire Resistance

Hey everyone,

I am quite new to FG, so please excuse any stupid questions :)

I added a Forge Dwarf to the party. As they get fire resistance as their heritage benefit, I wanted to add this somehow to the character sheet so the system takes care of it automatically. I found the "Damage Reduction" area under the hit points on the main tab and was wondering if this could be the place to put this in. I tried "RESIST: 1 fire", "1 fire" and all kinds of other things. Even just "RESIST: 1" and "1" just to see if this is doing anything at all. But no luck. If I roll damage for e.g. Fire Mephit (which is causing fire damage), it always hits for the full value. Did I do something wrong? Or is there another/better way to automate this?

Thank you,
VeilOfOblivion

P.S. I tried this in the classic version if this matters

[Edit] Just a small side note - I had to adjust the damage from the Fire Mephit from "Damage 1d6 piercing and 1d4 fire" to "Damage 1d6 piercing plus 1d4 fire" to make the Fire Mephit work for this experiment. But even after that fix, it still doesn't subtract the resistance

You need to add the resistance to the character as an effect, you can't add it just to the character sheet. I believe RESIST: 1 fire is correct, syntax wise.

Thanks for your answer, MaxAstro. So even this is a permanent thing, it still needs to be an effect assigned to the character all the time?

Yeah, there's no other way to handle it right now. I suggest making an action for it in the actions section so that you can quickly reapply it if it gets lost.

That is what I did after your first answer. Let's see if this will be "fixed" in the future. Feels wrong somehow :)

Thank you!

The RESIST effect is only operational when a creature is in the combat tracker and it has that effect applied to it. This is the way Fantasy Grounds works and how it's been designed, so it's not specifically something that needs to be "fixed".

For the majority of campaigns the PCs never leave the combat tracker. So a one time effect addition via a click of a button isn't a major inconvenience.

Maybe some way of applying things like this a little more automatically in the future will be developed. It's something I have in the back of my mind, but I'm concerned about performance and I won't even consider it until we know that FGU is as good, or better, at trawling through FG database nodes than it is now.

I suspect there might eventually be a way to handle permanent resistances on the character sheet, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Fantasy Grounds doesn't try to account for every edge case, to paraphrase a common thing Trenloe says. :)

EDIT: Ninja'd by the man himself. :P

No worries, don't see it as a big deal. Really a minor inconvenience. Just wondering why you have a field on the character sheet called "Damage Reduction" when a damage reduction because of a resistance is not working :)

But no worries. Still like the tool. Much more things to like there than to complain about. That is why I put the quotes around the word fixed :)
