So I have recently become aware of the fact that Earthdawn now has a 4th Edition, and I have been working on updating the community FG ruleset that I found to work with Unity. I will then be creating modules for all of the adventures that I have in hard copy as well as the ones I will be acquiring via PDF. The adventures I have are for 1st/2nd Edition, but are compatible with the newer ruleset by using the newer stats for the creatures.

I am basically trying to get a feel for how many people on here would be interested in playing or running a game of Earthdawn. If you are unfamiliar with Earthdawn but want to check it out, here is the link for the official publisher, where you can get an overview of the game, download a free quickstart pdf, or purchase the Players Guide.
https://fasagames.com/earthdawn-whatis/

If you are interested in playing (or GMing), please let me know either in this thread or through PM. I can also try to answer any questions people may have about the game or the setting.

Hmmm... Keep me posted, please...

Earthdawn was one of those games where the mechanics baffled me somewhat. The setting was **SO** appealing, though, as it was not just rote Tolkien-esque fantasy, but instead was a much different creature. I believe my wife still has a chunk of 1E stuff stuck in her game stuff, in fact.

So... Color me interested. :)

I completely agree with RHManiac. I was a huge ED fan back in the day because the setting is awesome. Unfortunately the rules were so cumbersome that I could never get excited about getting the game to the table. In any case I'm not familiar with the updates in the 4th edition as I don't think I played beyond 1st, but I'd be wiling to give it a shot.

Please keep me posted, we have a group of players ready to go.

Thanks for getting this going.

I honestly didn't expect this much response in less than 24 hours. :)

Back in the day when I first got into roleplaying, the second game session I ever played in was an Earthdawn game. I was hooked after that, and I attempted at the time to get my siblings into the game, and a few friends as well. Unfortunately they also had issues with the Step Dice system. But that was when all we had was litteral pen(pencil) and paper (and the books). But now with Fantasy Grounds, the ruleset does all the hard math for us, we just get to do the fun parts.

I am attempting to get the ruleset to work with Unity, though it does already work with Classic, so I may just have to break down and use Classic for Earthdawn, even though I really do enjoy the new features of Unity.

Unity needs a bit more work and optimization. Two weeks ago my one dnd game used it and while we liked it and want to use it..we have temporarily gone back to classic

Yea, I'm thinking my group might do the same.

Also, for those who are familiar with 1st/2nd Edition, 4th Edition so far seems to be very similar overall, with slightly updated numbers for the steps and the attributes tables, and Karma also works a bit different. So for those who have played it previously it would be a very small learning curve.

I am a huge ED fan, I am actually planning to use FGrounds for a campaign, but I am not familiar with setting it up. So please keep me posted I am looking forward to any updates you have.

Oh man, the old FASA site was my first main web hangout back in the early days. Must have been through 5 of those poorly bound 1st edition copies. I agree with others, the setting was fantastic but the mechanics just haven't kept up. 4th edition is a pretty big improvement, but it still feels like a re-edited 1st edition. Still, best of luck on this campaign!

Hi to all, just a quick question about how the projecto goes...:D

I know it's been a while, but I am still working on this. My latest (working) updates include a step lookup table (optimized), exploding dice (yes, ALL of them), Combat Tracker updates, and partially finished Character and NPC sheets.

I originally thought I could utilize some existing code from a previous Earthdawn ruleset, but that hasn't worked out, so I am essentially working from the base CoreRPG code. So it is taking me much longer than I had originally anticipated, but I am still motivated to create this. My sister loves to GM, and she likes the Earthdawn world, but hates having to do the math with the step system, so she agreed to run a game for our group of friends when I finally get this finished.

My wife has graciously agreed to do some graphical work for me on this, so hopefully it will also be very pretty when she is done.

I consider this to still be in super early pre-alpha stages. Once I am satisfied enough with it to feel like it is at least alpha-level, I will post my github for people to try it out. Until then, I hope you will all have patience with me.

Looking forward to it (patiently)! My group is clamoring for me to move our ED game to Fantasy Grounds but, like your sister, I need my automation.

I'm interested in the rule set and willing to play (or GM), schedule permitting. It's been awhile since I've GM'd Earthdawn, but I loved 1e's lore.

Well I will definitely update here and post when I need beta testers, but it's still a little ways off from being actually more useful than the Core Ruleset.

As for the lore, most of the 4th edition lore is very similar to 1e, although I think it has been expanded on significantly. They just published a new book last year called Empty Thrones. I managed to get into the kickstarter for it, and it rejuvenated my love for the game.

Andimus, I'm glad to hear that you're excited about this. Unfortunately I am still a long ways off from being able to publish anything, but if you're wanting to help me on this, let me know.

I am like many of the others. I bought ED when it came out, but could never run it (my group just wasn't into it). However, like any good gm, I took ideas from it. I haven't seen the new edition (will look into it) but the idea of playing an adept is still interesting.

Yes, I'm similar to others here. Got the 1st Edition and ran a long term campaign - Storm Wolves - and I've got got fond memories of it. Would love to run or play ED again in FGU.

I’m a fan of the setting of ED but haven’t played it since 1e. Unfamiliar with 4e but definitely interested.

I'm glad to know that there are so many people who want to play. I am currently working on this in my spare time.
4e is very similar in style to the previous versions, it is mostly behind the scenes type differences. But if you want to check it out, FASA has a free PDF of the quickstart guide on their store, along with all the other books which are available in pdf or print.

Earthdawn has always been a favorite game of mine and I'm glad to see that there is development on it for Fantasy Grounds. Any updates?

CaptJack2883
August 12th, 2022, 04:12
Not really. I've changed jobs since my last post, so I have less time to work on this than I did previously. It is very slowly becoming something that could be deemed usable, but it's still very far from complete.
I do appreciate it when people express interest in Earthdawn. :)

I have almost all 1st edition books (including the red cover limited edition), some 2nd edition, 3rd edition player's, and now a few of the 4th edition books. I've managed to talk my D&D group into giving Earthdawn a try, but with busy schedules I was hoping to run it online. I love Fantasy Grounds, but I'll have to use Foundry instead I guess.

Just out of curiosity, what does it take to work on a project like this for Fantasy Grounds? Could it be something the I and/or the community could assist with?

Hey VenimeuxHaine

Anyone can work on a ruleset project. Its a pretty time consuming project but can be a great learning experience too.
