I am reading over the AL Players Guide - Forgotten Realms.

On Page 2 in the upper right paragraph, it states that "your character must belong to a SEASON. This choice grants your character additional rules that they wouldn't otherwise have access to such as racial or class traits, or other rules unique to the season."

Not sure what this refers to? What is meant by selecting a SEASON to belong to.

Any help with this is appreciated!

That is specifically about the Adventurers League. Each year is a new season with a new flavour.

AL is currently in Season 9. There are unique changes to every season. Not much has changed from season 8 to 9, you can even keep playing a character from previous seasons. Player rewards and renown are the same. The seasonal incentives are unique to 9 and can only be taken advantage of if the character is rolled in the current season.

As a season 9 player you can still play modules from previous seasons, you just have to abide by season 9 player rewards stated in the AL Players Guide.
